THOMAS B'ISBEE, OFADAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EDWIN R.'STILWELL',: OF SAME PLACE.
A.Lettera Patent No. 76,295, rlted April T, 1868.
@Elie ,Soehnle referat trim tins: tttersamt mit making part tf tip' same.
T0 -ALL WIJIOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that L'THOMAS A. BISBEE,`ofDayton, county of Montgomery, and -State of Ohio, have invented a new vand improved Steam Pistou-Packing for Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making partrof this specification, in which- Figure l is an edge view of the head, with the ringY and plug in'position.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section/through the same, taken at the point.'
Figure 3 is auedge view of the head, with ring andplug removed.
Figure 4 is a. vertical view of the plug. v
Figure 5 is a face view of the plug. n
Figure 6 is a horizontal view of ring, with the plug attached; andv Figure 7 an edge view of the same. l
This invention relates to a novel arrangement4 for breaking tliejoint in the ring employed in packing the piston in steam-engines. v
The object of my invention is to furnish a self-adjusting plug, so that itV moves freelywith the ring in 'its lateral movements, andat the same time adjusts itselfito and perfectly breaks the joint of the ring. The ring is formed of one piece of metalio'nl-y, andeccentric4 in its shape.l The ring is made eccentric in form, as shown in the drawing, for thepurploselpof-makinghe expansion equal at all points of the circle. V
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction andoperation.,
In the accompanying 4drawing, iig-..1 represen'ts'a solidhead, with thering and plug in position. a a,g. 2, show the space allowed frthe play either-ing. Ao, fig. 2, shows-space allowed for the play of the plug. c?, fig. 1, shows the ring cut and the jointibrokenby the plug The plug E may be made elliptical between the points a a. The ring is madento t 'clos'elyfin the groove b, 15g. 4.
Operation: Steam enters the head by mean/s of small openings at e e e, forces thc ring and plug to their bearing .against Vthe opposite face or slidulder, and at the same time expands the ring, and forces it and the plug to abearing against the cylinder. .4 Thje action is repeated as the'steam isadmitted alternately at either end of4 the cylinder. i -f I What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The cylindrical plug E, substantially as and for tlie purposes described.
2. I claim th'e combination of theplug E and eccentric-ring A, substantially as described.
' THOS. A. BISBEE. Witnesses:
