Description

SANFORD O'. BLANDING, OF SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND.v
Letters Patent No. 80,704, dated August 4, 1868..
IMPROVEMENT IN UNION-VALV OOUPLING.
@he tgnhnle wenn in in ilgese sters nteirt mit linking nuit in tige sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
' Be it known that I, SANnonnO. BLANDI-Ne, of (Central Fells) Smithfield, in the county otrIrovidence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Union-Couplings, which I term a combined union-coupling and cheek-valve; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings, making a part of the same, lis n. full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is an elevation.
Figure 2 is a vertical section, on the line a: y of fig. 4.
Figure 3 isa top viewof the valve.
, Figure 4 is a top view of the coupling.
In the accompanying drawings- A C are thetwo well-known parts of n. coupling familiar to all mechanics.
Bis the usual coupling-ring, furnished with planes about its periphery, to accommodate a wrench, and forming in figure a many-sided polygon. The two pnrts of the coupling are held together by the ring B, in the usual way, clearly shown at fig. 2.
-Between the two flat faces of the parts ofthe coupling A and O,-I intel-pose a combined valve-'and packing-ring, D. Aitop view of such-valve is shown at fig. 3. Its construction is well iinderstoocl by all pump-manufacturers.
A circular disk ofleathcr is cut so that a segmental piece, fo, shall be taken lout of thc same, leaving a cent1-al circular portion, F, attached at oneA side to theidisk. This central portion, whichis Weighted, forms the common flop-valve, and the surrounding coneentric'portion, b, furnishes a packing to beinterposed between the two faces ofthe coupling. 4 i
It is quite obvious, that when-the parts are arranged and united as shown in section at fig. 2, the packing-, 4
ring will close the joint, and` the valve will be in proper position. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A combined coupling and check-valve, constructed and arranged substantially as described, forthe puri poses specified.Y
SANFORD O. BLNDING.
