COMBINATION-TRUNK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,216, dated June 7, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL P. WEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker City, v

in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have'invented new and useful Improvements inCombination-Trunks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination-trunks; and its object is to provide a neat, durable, and compact device of this character having compartments all of which are readily accessible.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the trunk. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the several compartments of the trunk open; and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 2.

The numeral 1 designates a casingwhich is preferably rectangular in contour and has a horizontal partition 2 at an elevation above the bottom thereof, forming an upper compartment 3, which is normally closed by a lid 4, having asuitable lock 5. The compartment formed between the partition 2 and the bottom 6 of the casing 1 is provided with aclosure 7, hinged at its lower edge to the front edge of said bottom 6 and provided with a lock 8 at the center of its upper portion. Ledges 9 are arranged centrally between the partition 2 and the bottom 6 and secured to the inner sides of the opposite ends of the casing 1, and movable on the said ledges is a slidable drawer 10. The space between the ledges 9 and the bottom 6 is engaged by a slidable drawer 11, both drawers having knobs 12 secured to the center of their front ends. The drawers are of such width that the knobs thereof will be fully linclosed when the drawers are pushed rearwardly to their full limit, and the closure 7 is locked overthe said drawers.- The ledges 9 extend fully to the front edges of the ends of the casing, and the front side of the drawer 11 has a vertical extension 13, which is formed by cutting away the upper corners 1 1 to permit the opposite ends of the drawer 11 to move under the ledges. The extension 13 forms a bracing-support for the drawer 10, and when both drawers are pushed fully into the casing 1 the said extension snugly engages the front edge of the bottom of the drawer 10 and the upper edge of the front of the latter drawer closely bears against the under side of the adjacent portion of the partition 2, the bottom of the drawer l1 firmly bearing upon the bottom 6 of the casing. By this means the weight-pressure on the partition 2, as well as the similar pressure established by the contents of the drawer 10, is not whollyimposed on the ledges 9 or the drawer 11, but is transferred in part, at least, to the bottom 6, and thus a more equal distribution of the weight ensues and injury to the drawers is lessliable to occur. Furthermore, by this means jamming of the drawers, particularly the lowermost drawer 11, will be obviated, and after the upper edge of the extension 13 has been disengaged from the outer extremity of the bot tom of the drawer 10 the said drawer 11 may be easily pulled outwardly.

When it is desired to pull the drawers 10 and 11 outwardly from the casing, the closure 7 is lowered to horizontal position, as shown by Fig. 3, and the parts are so arranged that when this closure is lowered its upper surface will be flush with the corresponding surface of the bottom 6. When the drawers are pushed into the casing, they are held securely against movement by the closure 7, which is locked, and by using drawers as set forth garments may be arranged therein without liability of becoming crushed or creased. Furthermore, garments or other articles within the drawers 10 and 11 can be readily reached without removing the articles contained in the upper compartment 3.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A trunk having a casing with a horizontal partition therein forming an upper compartment which is accessible solely through the top of the trunk and a lower compartment between said partition and the bottom of the trunk, a closure hinged at its lower edge to the front edge of the trunk and arranged to close the lower compartment, ledges arranged midway between the partition and the bottom of the trunk and secured to the inner sides of the opposite ends of the latter, a drawer slidably disposed on the said ledges and a second drawer movably arranged between the ledges and the bottom of the trunk, the front side of the bottom drawer having a vertical extension 13 formed with out-away upper corners to provide recesses to receive the outer ends of the ledges, said extension forming a bracing-support for the drawer above when both drawers are pushed fully into the trunk, the upper edge of the extension of the bottom drawer snugly engaging the front edge of the bottom of the upper drawer, and the upper edge of the front of the latter drawer closely bearing 5 In testimony whereofI affix my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
