UMBRELLA CASE OR BIN.
EPECIFIQAIIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 346,648, dated August 3, 1886.
Application filed December 14, 1885. Serial No. 185,669. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. DUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improved Umbrella Case or Bin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinvention relates to improved means of storing umbrellas, sunshades, and the like, in lieu of drawers, racks, or fixed cases, as heretofore used in shops or stores for that purpose, and has for its object economy of space, preservation of the umbrellas from dust, and greater facility of access thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved umbrella case or bin in its closed position; Fig. 2, a transverse section 011 linel l in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan thereof, showing the case or bin opened out; and Fig. l, a section on line 2 2 in Fig. 3, like letters of reference indicating like parts in all the figures.
A represents a case or bin, open at the top and divided vertically into two or more compartments, a a, in which the umbrellas are placed in an upright position. The case or bin A, with its compartments a a, may be of any desiredlength and width at top, and of a depth according to the lengths of the umbrellas. From the top of the case or binA its width diminishes downward to the bottom I), so as to correspond in shape as nearly as possible with that of the umbrellas when closely packed together.
On the outside of each end of the case or bin A, at or slightly below the horizontal center line of gravity of the latter, is a pivotpin, B, and by means of these pins B the case or bin A is mounted or pivoted within and between the two ends of a frame or chest, 0, which is closed on all sides, except at the front, where it is occupied by the corresponding side of the case or bin A when the latter is closed, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, in which position the case or bin A is secured by the spring, lock, catch, or bolt D, (or any other suitable fastening,) which engages with a hasp fixed on the upper front portion of the frame or chest 0.
\Vhen it is desired to obtain access to the umbrellas in the case or bin A, the spring, catch, or bolt D (or other fastening) is with drawn from its hasp by means of the handle E, and the case or bin A being then pulled over on its pivots B B by the handle E, its upper part and compartments a a will be brought to the outside of the frame or chest 0, as seen in Figs. 8 and at, so that the umbrellas can be removed or replaced at pleasure, the lower part of the case or bin A meanwhile moving inward until stopped by the back of the frame or chest 0. On lifting or throwing back the upper part of the case or binA, by the handle IE, it will retreat within the frame or chest 0 and be locked flush with the front thereof by the spring, catch, or bolt" D, as before. 4
In the end partition of the case or bin A is a transverse channel or groove, 0, extending from the front to the rear of the case, and in this groove is shot or rolling weight d,which, when the case is opened, will roll to the for ward end of the groove, as shown in Fig. 4, and when the case is closed will roll to the rear end of the groove, as shown in Fig. 2, thus, by the movement of the weight, facilitating the opening and closing of the case, and serving to retain the case either in its open or closed position-that is to say, when the up per part of the bin is being pulled forward or opened the weights (1 will roll to that end of the grooves or channels (1, and so by their gravity and momentum lessen the manual force required to open the bin, and without being pushed back or closed the weights-will roll to the rear end of the grooves or channels 0 and have a similar effect.
, By this invention, the case or bin A being shut up within the frame or chest 0, no dust can reach the umbrellas to damage them,as at present, and the trouble of opening and space required for large drawers and fixed cases to obtain access to the umbrellas are avoided.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the case or bin A, piv oted at B, and having grooves or channels 0, with rolling weights d, and frame or-ehest C, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of December, 1885.
\VILLIAM H. DUFF.
