To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT IV. DICKEnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oorsica, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tater-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in water-heaters especially designed for use for hot-water heating apparatus or systems for buildings or dwellings, while with slightv changes therein to provide additional space intermediate of the water-tubes it may be employed for generating steam.
Said invention has for its object to provide for increasing the water-circulation surface or area exposed to a heating action within prescribed limits, to obtain an extended watercirculating area to be heated, to promote the water-heating capacity of the heater, and to otherwi-se add to the utility and convenience of the same.
Said invention consists of certain features relating to the construction and arrangement of the component parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims concluding the following speciiication.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figurel is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a broken lateral elevation. Fig. 4 is a section taken on lineB B of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on theline AA of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a section produced on line X X of Fig. l.
In the carrying out of my invention I construct a heater l of the usual boiler iron or steel, preferably rectangular in general outline and whose dimension may be for general use, say, twenty inches by twenty-four inches in horizontal area or cross-section and five or six feet in its vertical section or area, according to the heating capacity required. Said heater is made or constructed with an inner wall or shell 2 and an outer shell or wall 3, forming duplicate bottom, sides,' ends, and top therefor, the narrow intervening space l thus produced between said shells or walls constituting a water space or chamberwholly encompassing and h avingits contained water exposed to the greater or less heating-surface of said inner shell or wall, the extreme bottom portion thereof having a much less heating capacity than other parts thereof. Intersecting or communicating with said extended water space or chamber 4 are numerous or series of horizontal rows of tubes or passages 5 also for containing additional water and for its further circulation and heating, said tubes or passages being arranged at quite close intervals and almost wholly filling the entire upper portion of the inner heating-chamber above the combustion or fire chamber 6. The tubes or passages of each horizontal row also alternate the tubes of the adjoining row of tubes, thus presenting the lowest tubes, receiving the initial cold water, to the greatest heat, while the tiers or rows of upper tubes, farther removed from such heat, receives the thus initially or previously heated water. Such intimate arrangement of numerous tubes and their extended capacity and circulation, to: gether with the encompassing or surrounding circulation space or area and the disproportionate heating action of the combustion products to which the aforesaid parts are subjected, provide, it is obvious, against the generation of steam, but avail forthe thorough or effective heating of their contents or the water, as is desired for use in hot-water heating systems or apparatus for buildings or dwellings, for which this invention is especially designed.
In the outer shell 3 of the heater opposite the ends of the tubes 5 are formed coincident openings fitted with screw-threaded caps or plugs 5, Vhaving angular projections or extensions to provide for the application thereof of a wrench forthe ready unscrewing or removal of said plugs to permit of the convenient ex- A The grate 7 is formed of a series of parallel suitably-spaced-apart bars 7, preferably of the construction shown, the bottom of each of which near one end is provided with teeth or a rack 7", which is geared to a pinion 7, secured to a shaft 7 d, suitably supported in bearings 7 c upon opposite sides of the ashcham ber. The opposite ends of said grate-bars rest upon or are supported by preferably a rod 7 f, bearing also laterally in supports upon the sides of said chamber. Said grate or grate-bars are thus adapted to have movement for the proper shaking thereof for removing the accumulation of ashes, clinkers, &c., therefrom, said shaking action being effected by suitably actuating the shaft 7d in any well-practiced way. Intermediately of and close to said grate-bars 7u and also receiving fuel thereon are arranged water-tubes 8, communicating' with the encompassing or surrounding water-space 4L and having their upper surfaces arranged in a plane somewhat above the corresponding surfaces of said gratebars to prevent the premature burning of the latter by the aid of the temperature-reducing action of the water circulation at that point. Such arrangement of parts also aids the heating of and promotes the water circulation, as is apparent. The outer shell 3 of the heater has also therein opposite the ends of the gratetubes 8 like screw-plugs 8 as those above referred to and for like purpose.
The usual combustion chamber door or opening 9 and ash-pit door or opening l0 are provided in the front portion of the heater, as shown.
It is assumed that I have the right under my patent to change the details herein without departing from the spirit of my invention and said invention yet be protected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A heater of the character described, comprising continuous inner and outer casings forming duplicate bottom, side, end and top walls, with an intervening water-space between said walls, and series of horizontal rows of water-tubes communicating with said water-space and the tubes of each row staggered with those next above.
2. A heater of the character described, comprising continuous inner and outer casings forming duplicate bottom, end, side and top walls, with an intervening water-space between said walls, series of horizontal rows of .water-tubes communicating with said waterspace and the tubes of each row staggered with those next above, and screw-threaded plugs engaging corresponding openings in the outer casing, opposite the ends of said tubes. 1n testimony whereof 1 have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
