Description

(No Model.) J. J. MOORE.
STEAM BOILER.
No. 393,781. Patented Dec. 4, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN J. MOORE, OF THORNTOVVN, INDIANA.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,781, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed June 11, 1888. Serial No. 276,678. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JONATHAN J. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in steam-boilers of that class which have an internal firebox.
The object of my improvement is to provide a grate for the fire-box in this class of steam-boilers which shall also form a part of the steam-generating surface.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a locomotive or portable boiler having my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same at a, Fig. 1.
My improvement consists in forming a part of the bottom of the fire-box of a solid inclined surface formed by bending the back sheet of the fire-box forward and downward, and in forming the grate of tubes having their open ends inserted in the back sheet of the fire-box, the said tubes being arranged in the same horizontal plane, with open spaces between them, so as to form a grate-surface, whereby the fuel-support consists of a smooth inclined surface from which the coals and ashes will slide forward and a grate formed by the tubes and which forms a part of the water-space of the boiler, all as hereinafter 5 fully described.
bent forward at a sharp angle, as at c, immediately above the point where the tubular grate-bars D are inserted, thus forming a partial support for the fuel. The closed ends 6 of the tubes D extend nearly to the front wall of the fire-box, but are not secured thereto, the purpose being to avoid any pressure on the walls of the fire-box from the expansion of the gratebars. For greater security the forward ends of the bars D may rest on a cross-bar, f, secured to the side walls of the fire-box. The open ends of the tubes D are screwed into the back sheet of the fire-box, so that their interiors communicate with and form a part of the water-space which surrounds the firebox. By this construction all warping and twisting and burning of the grate-bars is avoided. A large proportion of heat which has heretofore been lost in the ash-pit is absorbed by the tubular grate-bars and the inclined portion of the back sheet which forms an extension of the grate and is utilized in the production of steam.
I claim as my invention In a steanrboiler, the combination of an internal fire-box having its back sheet inclined forward and downward and a series of ,tubes each having one end inserted in said back sheet of the fire-box below said inclined portion and arranged to form a grate for the fire- -boX, all substantially as and for the purpose specified. v
JONATHAN J. MOORE.
