SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,383, dated February 11, 1896. l

To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES TUCK TOUL- MIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boilers; and I do hereby declare description of the same.
This invention relates in particular to lowpressure sectional boilers for heating purposes of the kind described in Letters Patent No. 52l,995,issued tome June 29,1894; and among its objects are to increase and improve the water-heating surface, to improve the means for regulating the draft, to provide for repairing the grate without extinguishing the lire, and to otherwise simplify and improve the construction.
In order that my invention may be clearly ascertained I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I carry the invention into practice, and then point out the various features in the claims.V
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like parts are designated by the same letters in all the iigures.
Figure l is a front elevation of a boiler embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation of the same on the line 3 3, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of one of the sections of the boiler. Fig. G is a sectional side view on the line 6 C, Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a part hereinafter referred to.
I construct the body of my boiler of a variable number of transverse vertical hollow interior sections A, a vertical water-back section B and a vertical hollow front section C, all of which sections abut, substantially as described in my aforesaid-prior patent, No. 521,995, and may be bound together by tiebolts or by the supply and return pipes, as shown.
Each interior section A is cast with side water-legs A A2, a transverse water-head A3, and dome A4, a water-waist A5 and a water-bridge Al of less thickness than the water-legs, the combined spaces below the water-waists A5 Serial No. 553,243. (No model.)
draft-openings alternately above and below the water-bridges A, so that by closing all of said dampers the zigzagflue referred to in my said prior patent is formed, while by opening said dampers a more or less direct draft is obtained as may be desired.
In my present invention I form the waterbridges A6 of all the sections at one side thereof and form the sections with water-pillars E at the inner ends of the water-bridges, the combined spaces between the abutting water-pillars E, the water-legs A', the waterwaists A5, and the water-heads A3 forming a longitudinal return-flue F, which leads from the vertical flues between the water-bridges A6 at the front of the boiler to the draft-opening G in the back section B, so that the products of combustion may be led through the zigzag flue between the water-bridges A6 to the front of the boiler and then by the returnflue F to the back of the boiler, thereby greatly increasing the effective heating-surface of the boiler. I likewise form the water-back section B with a draft-opening II, leading outward from the back of the combustion-chamber, and provide said draft-opening H with a damper H and also the return-draft opening G with a damper G. These direct an d return draft openings II and G, I connect by means of a draft-box J, attached to the back section B,with the escape-flue K, so that the products of combustion may be led directly to the escape-flue K by opening the damper H', to strengthen the draft, or by closing said damper Il may be led through the vertical and return flues to the escape-flue, the draft then being regulated by the damper G.
I generally prefer to corrugate the part of the water-back section B, forming the back of the combustion-chamber,to increase the heating-surface thereof.
In the bottom of the draft-box J, I arrange IOO an upwardly-opening damper L, by which arrangement I iind I am enabled to obtain greatlyimproved control of the draft, the cold air being drawn into the box from below.
I provide for operating the respective rows of dampers D simultaneously by means of arms D' and connecting-rods D2 on the eXterior of the boiler, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The supply-pipe M and the return-pipes N, I in this case connect with the dome and water-legs of each section by means of straight coupling-pipes O, having reversely-threaded ends,instead of the bent couplingpipes shown in my said prior patent.
I have also now devised a novel form of grate, consisting oi' an ind ependent grate-section P for each section of the boiler, which section is introduced through an admission-v opening Q in the side water-legA, and its end gud'geons mounted' to turn in sockets R R', thev socket R being formed on the inside of the water-leg A2 and the socket R being formed on a removable plate or cover R, (shown in detail in Fig. 8,) which is fastened over the opening Q and can be detached tov allow thev admission or removal of the gratesecti'on. By this construction I am enabledI to remove and repair or replace any section of the grate at will without taking the boiler apart and without extinguishing the iire.

The front section C of the boiler is fitted with the furnace-door V, the ash-pit door W, and the door V for admission to and clean.- ing both the vertical and return iiues.
I claim as my inventionl. A boiler constructed of a number of vertical sections, each formed with side waterforming a. longitudinal return-flue connected with the vertical ilues between the waterbridges and with the combustion-chamber below the Water-waists, and supply and return pipes connected with the head and water-leg of each section, substantially as shown and described.
2. A boiler constructed of a number of vertical interior sections, each formed with side water-legs, a transverse water-waist A5, and a transverse water-bridge A6 of less thickness thanl the water legs and head, and a waterpillar E; a vertical rear section provided with a water-back, a damper II connected with the vertical iiues between the water-bridges, and a waterpillar E; a draft-box I, connected both with the damper H and with the returnline between the pillars and' the water-legs; and supply and return pipes connected with the head and water-leg of each section, substantially as shown and described.
3. A boiler provided with a series of open- Aings extending from the iire-box outward 'through the side of the boiler, a sectional i grate,th'e sections of which are introduced and removable independently endwise through said openings, a series of independently rel movable covers for the respective openings j and independent bearings for the grate-sections at the respective covers and on theV opposite side of the boiler, whereby any gratesection may be removed without disturbing the other grate-sections, their bearings or the ire, as set forth.
4f'. A boiler formed of vertical sections, each of which is provided with a separate opening extending through one water-leg to admit a grate-section from the outside into the firebox, aseparate removable cover for said opening, having a bearing for one end of the gratesection, and a bearing on the opposite waterleg for the other end of the grate-section.
