PATENT OFFICE. I
CLARENCE G. BEYER, OF MAIISDALE, PENNSYLVANIA; PHILIP BEYER EXECUTOR OF SAID CLARENCE G. BEYER, DECEASED.
HARNESS-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,120, dated June 7, 1904.
Application filed April 18, 1902.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. BEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing near Mausdale, in the county ofM ntour, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Harness-Buckle to be Used for Connecting the Hip-Strap and the Breeehing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in harness-buckles, the chief objects of which are to provide a device of this character which when in use will offer no obstruction or projection to catch and hold the reins nor cause the end of the hip-strap to offer such obstruction to the reins. Furthermore, my improved buckle performs the work of three devices heretofore necessary-namely, the ring, buckle, and strapand, further, my invention can be applied in about one-half the time hitherto necessary in connecting the hip -strap and breeehing.
Other objects will appear in the specification and fully set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view,of my buckle.
A indicates the body portion of the buckle provided with a smooth plain under surface 1 and somewhat thickened for strength and rigidity. A portion of the inner surface of the body portion-is recessed or cut away, as at 2, the inner end 3 of the recess being curved to permit the ready insertion of the strap B. The remaining portion 4: of the inner surface is curved in an approximate are of a circle and is provided with a projecting pin or stud 5 for a purpose which will be presently described. The body portion is shaped in general contour something like a paddle having an angular end, the recessed portion being located at the broad or angular end thereof. Nails 6 6 are located at the sides of the body portion and integral therewith, the walls conforming to the shape of the body portion, and supportedby these walls is the guard C,which, like the body portion, is approximately paddle-shaped, but having a rounded end projecting slightly beyond the end of the body por- Serial No. 103,666. (No model.)
tion A. This guard C is provided with a rectangular slot or opening 7 into the approximate center of which projects the stud 5.
The Walls 6 6 are recessed or undercut at one end, as at 8,the opposite ends being curved,
of the straps D and E in the slots 10 10, the
opposite ends of the straps D E being secured to the breechingstrap. (Not shown.) The hipstrap B is then passed through the passageway and out of the opposite or broad end of the buckle. In inserting the strap B the end is first passed under the overhanging bar C, located at the extreme end of the buckle and projecting beyond the body portion A, the strap being drawn up through slot 7 until the desired hole in the strap is over stud 5,
I am aware that devices of this nature and constructed to attain similar results have been patented; but I am not aware that anything has been invented which is constructed like my device.
It is evident that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Aharness-buckle comprising a body portion having an inclosed passage-way extending therethrough, the body portion comprising a base portion, a cap-plate superposed thereabove, walls connecting the base portion and cap-plate, the cap-plate provided with a transverse opening extending to the passageway, a stud mounted upon the base portion, and means for securing flexible connections to the buckle.
2. A hollow buckle comprising a base, a guard-plate disposed thereabovc, walls connecting the guard-plate and base, and forming an inclosed passage-way, a stud on the base, the guard-plate provided with an opening extending transversely therethrough and communicating with the passage-way above the stud, and means on the buckle for securing flexible connections thereto.-
3. A buckle comprising a body portion provided with a curved inclosed passage-way extending therethrough, the body portion consisting of an interiorly-curved base, a correspondingly-arced cap-plate and walls connecting the base and cap-plate, the latter provided with an opening communicating with the passage-way, a stud mounted on the base beneath the opening and means for attaching straps to the buckle.
4:. A hollow buckle comprising a body portion, the inner surface of which is provided with a recessed and a thickened curved portion, a curved guard-plate and walls connecting the edges of the guard-plate and body portion, a stud projecting from the thickened portion of the body into the hollow interior of the buckle, the guard-plate provided with a slot opening into the hollow interior of the buckle above the stud, a laterally-curved bar connecting the walls at the upper end of the buckle, the body portion having oppositelyinclined slots formed at the lower end thereof, the walls being undercut adjacent the slots in the body portion.
5. An approximately paddle-shaped buckle comprising a body portion, a curved plate and walls connecting the opposite edges of the guard-plate and body portion to form a curved passage-way therebetween, the interior surface of the body portion provided with a thickened portion to reduce the size of the passageway at that point, a stud projecting into the curved passage-way, the buckle provided with a slot opening into the passage-way above the stud, the broader end of the buckle having oppositely inclined slots formed therein, the walls being undercut adjacent the slots.
6. A buckle having a broad and a narrow portion, the buckle comprising a body portion, a curved guard-plate and walls connecting the opposite edges of the guard-plate and body portion forming a passage-Way therebetween, the interior surface of the body portion provided with a gradually-thickened portion to reduce the size of the passage-way at that point, the thickened portion merging into a depressed portion, a stud projecting into the passage-way, the guard-plate having a slot therein opening into the passage-way above the stud, one wall of the slot being beveled, one of the members having oppositely-inclined slots formed therein at the broader portion of the buckle, the walls being undercut adjacent the slots to form a wide mouth.
7 A hollow buckle comprising a body portion, a guard-plate and walls connecting the guard-plate and body joined to form a passage-way therebetween having mouths of different widths, the guard-plate extending beyond the body portion and having a slot formed therein opening into the passage-way, a stud projecting into the passage-way beneath the slot, the body portion having oppositely-inclined slots formed therein, the walls being undercut adjacent the slots to form the wider mouth of the passage-way.
8. A buckle comprising a body portion provided with apartially-inclosed passage-way, the body portion comprising a base, a cap or face plate and walls connecting the cap-plate and base, the walls extending from one end of the body portion nearly to the opposite end thereof, a stud located on the base, the capplate provided with an opening extending into communication with the passage-way above the stud, and means for securing the buckle.
9. A buckle comprising a body portion, upwardly-projecting walls located upon the side edges of the body portion, the walls extending continuously from one end of the body portion nearly to the opposite end, the upper portions of the walls overhanging the opposite end of the body portion, a guard-plate located above and extending over the body portion, the side edges of the guard-plate connected to the upper edges of the walls, a bar connecting the upstanding walls at one end of the body portion, the bar and guard-plate spaced apart to form a slot, a stud projecting upwardly from the body portion within the space uncovered by the slot, the buckle provided with means for attaching it to the harness.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
