PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M. GALLAGHER, OF OLD ORCHARD, MISSOURI.
SIDE FRAME FOR TRUCKS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,043, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed November 1, 1902.. Serial No- 129,700. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Old Orchard, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Frames for Trucks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a east side frame of the diamond style for car-trucks; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a top or plan view of my improved side frame, showing part of the truck structure. Fig. II is a side view, part in vertical section. Fig. III is a perspective view of one of the side frames with the removable compression member raised out of position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents part of the bolster of a oar-truck, 2 one of the axleboxes, and 3 a pair of the wheels. Each side frame of the truck is made in diamond form and is cast in a single piece of metal, except for a compression member, which is removably secured above the bolster-opening of the frame.
irepresents the upper arch-bar; 6, thelower arch-bar; 5, the extended ends of the frame; 7, the spring-seat, and 10 the bolster guidebars or columns. These parts are all formed in one integral casting, thus making an inexpensive, durable, and substantial side frame and one which is not liable to get out of order. The opening between the columns 6 receives the bolster and bolster-springs and is closed at top by means of a compression member 8,
upper ends of the columns.
that fits in notched recesses 9, formed in the The compression member is held in position by means of bolts 11, that also hold the central part of the pedestal tie-bar 12. The axle-boxes are held between the outer ends 5 of the frame and the outer ends of the tie-bar by means of plates 13 and bolts 14:.
I claim as my invention- 1. A side frame for car-trucks of diamond shape, having its upper and lower arch-bars, extended ends, spring-seats and bolster-columns all formed in one integral casting, the bolster-columns being perforated throughout their length, in combination with a removable compression member, a removable pedestal tie-bar, and a pair of bolts each extending through one of the perforations in the bolstercolumn and securing the compression member and the pedestal tie-rod to the integral side frame.
2. A side frame for car-trucks of diamond shape having its lower arch-bar, its springseat, and its extended ends formed in a single casting, in combination Witha removable compression member fitted over the bolster-opening, substantially as set forth.
3. A side frame for car-trucks of diamond shape, having its lower arch-bar, extended ends, spring-seats, and bolster-columns all formed in one integral casting, in combination with a removable compression member fitted to the upper ends of the bolster-columns, substantially as set forth.
THOMAS MLGALLAGHER.
