To all whom it may concern:
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, andState of Illinois, have invented a certain how, useful, and Improved Car-'lruck Side Frame, of which the following is a full, clear,- and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
-My invention relates to railway car-trucks and has s cial referenge to improvements in trucks 0 that class wherein the journal boxes are rigidly secured in the truck side frames, and wherein the truck bolster is suported by springs in or upon said siderames. In a truck of this class the truck bolster is usually'of about the same length as the car axles, and its ends extend through the bolster springs being arranged in the vertical planes 0 the side-frames.
The object of my invention is to im rove the construction of the side;frames 0 car trucks of the class mentioned, and the particular object of the. invention is to rovid'e an improved cast-steel side frame f hr cartrucks.
Further and particular objects of the invention are to provide single-member caststeel side-frames of such character that the bolster may be inserted into the-openings of said frames after the frames and journal boxes have been placed upon the truck wheels; further, to provide an improved -sin-. gle-member side frame whichs all be characterized as above and which nevertheless, shall have continuous or uninterrupted top andbottom chordal portions or flan es.

As shown in the drawings, 22 represent the wheels of a car-truck; 33 the axles; 4-4 the journal boxes 5 the bolster; 5 the so bolster guides, secured upon the bolster; 6-6 the bolster springs, and 7, a bottom tie-bar. The parts of the car truck here mentioned may be of any suitable form or construction adapted for employment with w rigid side-frames. My novel side frame comprises a single steel-casting, A, having ends, B, that are secured'upon the tops of the journal boxes by the usual bolts, which letter also secure the ends of the .tie' bar, 7.
My side frame is a single piece of metal, being preferably a steel casting. The mid dle portion of the side frame or beam is provided with a bolster and spring opening, gap or pocket, C. The bottom and top flanges or chordal portions, D and E, are continuous, extending from end to end of the beam, but the top portion, E, is curved outwardly adj acent to the opening, C, thereby providing s ace for the admission of the bolster, 5, from above, as is Well shown, in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. The outwardly curved portion, E, of the top flange, E, affords the requisite strength in the upper part of the side frame, without closing thetop of the frame. The gap between the main ortions of the frame is closed by a light lbckin bar, F, secured to the top fla e by he ts, F. The end gortions of the pocket contain the 1.05

These interloc with the guides 5, on the bolster and serve to guide the'bolster vertically and i to prevent end-wise motion thereof. A-sufcan-l side of the frame, the columns being adequate as guides for the bolster. It will be observed that the locking bar extends be-' tween the tops of the columns and when in position practically completes the top flange, E, of the frame. i find it preferable to place the walls, A and A at substantially equal distances from the middle vertical plane of the frame, but it will be obvious that'the spring pocket may be non-symmetrical with reference to the web or middle plane of the side frame. This and other modifications of my invention will readily suggest themselves to one skilled in the art and I do not confine the invention to the specific structure herein described.
In assembling my novel railway car truck,
the journal boxes are rigidly secured to theside frames and are placed upon the axles; the side frames are then tied and braced by suitable members (not shown) of ordinary 6D scenes the spaces er epenings in the side-trainee and properly engaged with the guides or columns thereof. The locking bars are then bolted upon the frames to secure the bolster therein.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The herein described improvements in car trucks, comprising a single member side frame having continuous top and bottom chordal portions, said top chordal portion being bowed outwardly at the middle to admit a bolster, a vertical plate portion extending between said chordal portions and at the middle substantially conforming to the bowed out part of the top chordal portion and an inwardly bowed vertical plate portion of less height than the main plate portion, a spring pocket being formed between the inwardly and outwardly bowed portions, substantially as described.
