l yNTOR I WITNESSES UNITED STATFSAIIENT OFFICE.
OSWALD S. PULLIAM, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PITTSBURGH STEEL FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA., A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SIDE-FRAME CONSTRUCTION.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osw.\LD S. Pinamar,
of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny' and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Frame Construction, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved car truck side frame construction having separable journal-boxes, with the side frame proper and the journalboxes having coaeting means for securing the'journal-boxes to the side frame.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved side frame construct-ion comprising a side frame proper having in addition to the means coacting with means on a separable journal-box for locking the same together, auxiliary means cooperating with means for securing a standard journal-box of the usual and well known construction to the side frame.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a side frame, and particularly a side frame of the type shown, that will be considerably stronger at the juncture of the top-member and the oblique or inclined member, joining the top and bottom members, than has heretofore been the case in integral cast metal side frames.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my irvention, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a side frame constructionembodying my invention showing ajournal-box connected with the side frame proper at one end and a journal-box spaced away from the side frame' at the opposite end; Fig. 2, a detail top plan of an end of the side frame; Fig. 3, a bottom plan of the same; Fig. ,t, a part elevational and a part sectional view taken on line IV-IV of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a side elevational view of the journal-box of the form of Fig. l; Fig. 6, a plan of said box; Fig. 7, a vertical sectional view ot' the journal-box of the `form of Fig. 5 particularly showing the lug on the top of the box and the manner of connecting same with anend of the side frame;
Fig. 8, a detailed sectional view showing the side frame proper in connection with a well known type of journal-box, and means for securing the journal-box to the side frame,
I the section of the side trarne being taken ou Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
Serial No. 619,042.
line VIII-VIII of Fig. 2; Fig. 9, a Side elevational view of a part of a side frame and a detached journal-box showing a modified lorm of means for securing the box to the side frame; Fig. 10, av horizontal scetional view taken on line X-X of Fig. 9; and Fig. 11, an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line XI-XI of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the side frame comprises a top-member 1 terminating in end portions 2, said portions 2 comprising two spaced vertically extending members a. and I) joined together by apertured lugs or cross pieces 3. Each of the members a and is provided with an opening et adapted to receive a bolt or cotter pin The side frame also includes a bottom-tmember G and inclined members 7 connecting the top and` bottom members. The side frame, as illustrated. comprises an integral cast steel structure formed, in addition to the elements mentioned, with a bolster receiving opening 8, columns 9, and a spring seat 10.
Attention is called to the construction of my side frame at the junctures of the upper end portions 2 and the inclined members 7, as illustrated, the vertically extending members a and Z) enter into the formation of the upper ends of the inclined members as particularly shown by Fig. ll, thus provided at points which have. heretofore been weak, a strong construction.
As shownin the form 'of Fig. 1, the side frame proper atI each end thereof below the end portions 2, is provided with a journalbox engaging member 11. `These rmembers 11 are respectively supported by ribs 12 projecting outwardly from the inclined p0rtions 7, andlocated at the lower ends of ribs 12, I provide an apertured member 13. The separable journal-boxes 14, shown in the form of Fig. l, each has formed integral .with a side thereof a pocket 15, said pocket curing means of the frame and journalbox 'are reversed, that is to say, in this form instead of forming a pocket on the journalbox I form the side frame with a pocket a and the journal-box 141,3v withan engaging member 11a adapted to be entered in the pocket 15a ot the side frame. In other respects theconstruction of the form of Fig. vis substantially the same as the form of lo Whenthejournal-boxesare applied to the side. frame, the lug 19 of each boXis placed between the vertical members a and b of an end port-ion .2 and the journal-box engaging member 11 entered in pocket 15 of the journal-box. The bolt or cotter pin 5- is passed through the openings inmembers a and b and through the apertured lug 19 as particularly shown by Fig. 7
Fig; 8 shows a standard journal-box ot well known construction applied to the side frame, in this instance I utilize the apertured members 3 of the end portions 2 for receiving box-bolts 21, which latter are passed down through the said membersl 3 and through lugs 22 formed o-n the journalbox 20. 23 designates a short tie-bar formed with openings 24 through which the v bolts 21 pass and with a bent and apertured portion 25, adapted to engage the apertured member 13 of the side frame.v The tie-bar 23 'is securedat its inner end to the said member 13 by means of a bolt 26.
