'elevational UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSWALD S. PULLIAM, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PITTSBURG EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
.l pea-1s I.
1 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that. I, Oswano S. PULLIAM, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of lennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved car truck side frame comprising a top-member, a. bottom-membcr and journal boxes, preferably formed as an integral cast metal structure, having a column or colun'ins connecting the top and bottom members, with said column or columns constructed to permit a bolster having column-guides formed integral therewith, to be readily placed in position in the side-frame and removed therefrom.
Further objects of the present invention are to provide a side frame having a column provided with a separable portion adapted to be removed to permit a bolster to be passed through the column, and to provide means for connecting'the separable portion of the column to the side frame.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a column comprising a separable portion with a brake-beam hanger formed integral therewith.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a side frame constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view taken on line IIII of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side elevational view of a modified form of my invention showing each of the columns provided with separable portions; Fig. 4, a sectional view taken on line IVIV of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a side elevational view showing each of the columns provided with a separable portion and a modified form of construction for securing a brake-beam hanger to the side frame; Fig. 6, a vertical sectional view of the form of Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a. side view of the side frame constructed in accordance with my invention showing brake-beam hangers formed intogral with the removable or separable portions of the columns; Fig. 8, a vertical sectional view particularly showing a brakebeam hanger formed integral with a separable portion of a column; Fig. 9, a side elevational view of a. still further modified CAR-TRUCK SIDE FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A 16 1912, Application filed February 23, 1911.

form of my invention; and Fig. 10, a detailed sectional view taken on line X--X of Fig. 9.
formed integral with the ends of the top and bottom-members. illustrated and as preferred comprises the top-member, bottom-member, and journal-.
boxes all formed in an integral casting, but the journal-boxes may be separable if desired.
In the form of Fig. 1, I have shown one of the columns 4, connecting the top and bottom-members of the side frame, as a continuous member formed integral with the casting constituting the side frame, while the other column comprises a separable or detachable member 5 and two integral column portions 6 and 6 respectively formed with the top and bottom-members. The separable member 5 is provided at its upper and lower ends with apertured lugs 7 and is secured to the respective portions 6 and 6 by bolts 8 adapted to be passed through the apertures in the separable portion of member 5 and corresponding apertures formed in the portions 6 and 6" respectively.
In all of the modified forms of my invention as illustrated, the separable portions 5, comprising portions of the columns connecting the top and bottom-members of the side frame are similar, with the exce tion of the form of Fig. 9, which will be hereinafter more fully described. By forming the columns with the separable portions as shown, I am enabled to place a bolster having column-guides formedintegral therewith in position in the side frame by simply removing one or both of the separable portions 5.
9 designate brake beam hangers adapted to be secured to tljieq'side frame; and in the form of Fig. 1 the upper or top-member of the side frame is 'formed with openings 10 adapted to receive a reduced portion 11 of the hanger, said hanger being secured there to by a nut 12. In the form of Fig. 5, as particularly shown by Fig. 6, I place the brake-beam hanger in a lower position than in thcform of Fig. 1 and have its reduced portion 11 passed through the apertures The side frame as the separable portion of the side frame column, and 6* and 6 the integral portions thereof. The separable portion of each column is connected with the integral portions thereof by means of a vertically extending column-bolt 13 adapted, to be passed through opening d formed in the'respective integral column portions ahd through opening e formed in the separable portion 5.
What I claim is: l l. A car trucli side frame having integral top and bottom members," a column having an opening, said column opening being adapted to permit a bolster to be passed therethrough, and means for closing the opening.
2. A car truck side frame-having top and bottom members and a column connecting the top and bottom members said column having an opening adapted to permit a bolster to be passed therethrough, and means for closing the opening. r
3. A car truck side framecomprising a topanember, a bottom-member and a jour- Ila box all formed integralya portion of a column formed integral with the top-memher and a portion formed integral with the bottom-member, and a separable column portion connecting the integral column portions. 1
4. A car truck side frame having top and bottom members each formed with a column portion, and a separable column portion con-,
necting the integral column portions.
5. A car truck side frame comprising a top-member, a bottom-member and a journal-box all formed integral, a portion of a column formed integral with the top-member and a portion formed integral with the bottom-member, a separable column portion connecting the integral column portions, and means for securing the separable portion to the integral portions.
6. A car truck side frame having top and bottom members each formed with a column portion, aseparable column portion connecting the inte ral column portions, and means for securing the separable column portion to'the integral column portions.
7. A car truck side frame having integral topand bottom members, a column having an opening, said column opening being adapted to permit a bolster to be passed therethrough, and closing means for the opening having a brake-beam hanger formed integral therewith.
8. A car truck side frame having top and bottom members each formed with a column portion. and a separable column portion formed with a brake-beam hanger connecting the integral column portions.
9. A car truck side frame comprising a top-member, a bottom-member, a column connecting the top and bottom members comprising a. portion formed integral with the top and bottom members and a separable portion connecting the integral portions. In testimony whereof I ailix my signature n presence of two witnesses.
