To all whom, it may concern:
` Be it known that I, OscAR PENNING'ION OLI- vER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hat-Supports and Grease-Retainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
-The object of this invention is to provide a device for giving shape to and retaining the form of the crown of soft felt hats, and more especially hats having, creased crowns.
It consists in the novel features of construction and in the arrangement or combinations thereof, as will be hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse lvertical section of a hat and my invention applied thereto. Fig.
2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention.
The invention comprises, essentially, a framehaving end pieces a, which are bent or bowed in a horizontal direction toV conform with the shape of the front and back portions of the hat-crown These end pieces may be made of any suitable material, such as stiff cardboard, and are each integrally connected adjacent to their upper edges withextensionpieces c, which are bifurcated' to provide parallel-disposed arms 0l. The arms of one of the frame-sections are slidably connected to the arms of the other by looped extremities e and by special clamping devices, such as a bent spring-lever f, pivotally connected to the pendent lugs g of the arms of one of the .f
sections and engaging the armsV of the other section. The extension-pieces c and the said arms are preferably made of sheet-steel or other like resilient metal, and the arms may advantageously be curved in a transverse direction, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to fit more snugly in their proper positions within the hat. l
The operation of the invention is as follows: The end pieces a, being first trimmed to suit the height of the crownof the hat to which the ldevice is to be applied, are inserted inside of the hat, so that the said end pieces will be located between the crown and the sweat-band L. The ends now being pressed longitudinally asunder by the hands of the operator, the crown is not only pressed outwardly to its normal shape, but the material at the top of the crown is depressed thereby .to form the crease j.. vAfter being extended 'the overlapping arms, which make the creaseretaining portion of the frame, are locked by the aforesaid clamping means. This device is extremely simple, but is perfectly adapted to accomplish the purposes for which intended. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described device, consisting of a frame composed of adjustable sections, each having a vertical transversely curved end piece and two parallel arms disposed longitudinally and at approximately right angles from the said end piece, the inner ends of the arms of one section being provided with loops and the inner ends of the arms of the other section being provided with clamping means, such means consisting of bent spring-levers pivotally connected theretoand adapted to bear against the arms of the other section,
substantially as set forth.
