PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ADAM HECKENBACH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VIOLIN.
QPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,480, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed November 15, 1902. Serial No. 131,505. (No model.)
To 6055 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN ADAM HEcK N- BACI-I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and Improved Violin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7 V
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved violin, violincello, or similar stringed musical instrument which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to insure the production of a full, sweet, and mellow tone when the instrument is played.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in. the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. Qis an enlarged side elevation of the body of the instrument. an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a like view of a modified form of the improvement.
The violin or like stringed musical instrument has its body A of the same general outline as instruments of the present make; but the belly B has its middle portion disconnected from the corresponding portions of the sides C by cutting out a portion of the side at the top to leave a slot D between the belly and the side. As shown in the drawings, the slot D extends along and a short distance beyond the ends of the inward bends C of the sides C, so that the f-hole portion of the belly is Fig. 3 is.
unsupported from the sides, and hence completely free to vibrate without being hindered by the sides. By this arrangement a full,
sweet, and mellow tone is obtained on playing the instrument.
The bottom Eof the body A, as well as the remaining parts of the instrumentsuch as the neck and its fingerboard, the head, the tailpiece, the bridge, and the stringsare the same as in similar instruments heretofore constructed, so that further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
In the modified form shown in Fig. A the edge of the belly B is rabbeted, as indicated at B, and into the rabbet projects the upper edge of a corresponding length of the side C without, however, touching the rabbeted portion throughout the length of the slot, so that the f-hole portion is unsupported from the sides for the purpose mentioned, and at the same time a more solid appearance is given to the violin-body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A violin having a violin-body comprising a bottom, sides rising from the bottom and havinginward bends and a belly having /'holes and provided at itsedge with a recess, the
upper ends of the said sides being spaced from the recess at the f-hole portions, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ADAM HECKENBACH.
