UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GABRIELSON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO AARON HELIN AND ANDREYV I-IENDRICKSON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 711,104, dated October 14, 1902.
Application filed February 13, 1902. Serial No. 93,858. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GABRIELSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stringed Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bridges for stringed musical instruments, especially violins; and my invention consists in making the bridge hollow and mounting it over two openings in the sounding-board, whereby the volume of sound and the quality of the tone are greatly improved.
My invention is represented in the 'accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a bridge constructed in accordance with myinvention on a violin. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the bridge. Fig. 4is a section of the bridge, taken on line IV IV of Fig. 2, showing the adjacent portion of the sounding-board broken away. Fig. 5 is a section of the bridge, taken on line V V of Fig. 2, showing the adjacent portion of the sounding-board broken away. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section of the bridge.
As shown, the bridge l has the usual external appearance, excepting that one of its upper edges projects upwardly, forming a lip 3, which is curved in the usual manner and provided with notches for the strings. The bridge is made hollow, as shown, being open at the top and bottom, and is mounted over two openings 4 4, cut in the Vsoundingboard 5. When the bridge is in position, these openings are invisible. The elect of the openings 4 4, together with the hollow bridge, is to increase the loudness and sweetness of the tones of the instrument to which these improvements are applied.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a stringed musical instrument, the combination of the sounding-board having an opening therein which registers with the position of the bridge, and a bridge having an opening entirely therethrough from top to bottom, said opening being in communication with said opening in the sounding-board, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WM. GABRIELSON.
