COMBINED BEVEL AND SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 61,336, dated May 31, 1904.
Appncanon'id April 2,1904. vserial No. 201,278. (No man.) l
To wZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR G.' TAGUE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bevel and Square, of which the following is a specification;
My invention pertains to measuring instruments of the bevel type, and contemplates the provision of a combined bevel and T-squar'e, which is calculated tofacilitate the finding of angles and is therefore adapteditobe used to advantage in framing roofs.
With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, form'-l ing part of this specificatiomin which- Figure l is a side elevation ofI the instrument constituting the present and preferred embodiment of my invention as the same appears when its arms are fully extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the instrument as it appears when folded-z'. c., when the arms are swung into the body. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of the instrument, taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. Q. Fig. 4 is a transverse section, on an enlarged scale, taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is aperspective view, on an enlarged scale, of one of the slides of the instrument removed.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts-in all of the several views of the drawings.
In the present and preferred embodiment of my invention the combined bevel and T-square comprises a body A, preferably of steel or other suitable metaLarms B, also preferably of steel or other suitable metal, having rel duced and lapped inner ends ci, pivotally conslides.
nected at b to the body, slides C, movablerindependently of each other inthe body. and in the direction of the length thereof, links D, pivotally connected to the arms B, and bolts E and wing-nuts F, through the medium of which the links are pivotally connected to the As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the body A is made up of walls c,
connected together in such manner as to af- Yford a space d between them and having slots c disposed at right angles to said space and also having recesses gin their outer sides. Onthe'bottoms'of thesaid recesses graduated scales f are provided, as clearly shown in Figs,
l and 2one of the said scales and its com' plementary slideC and arm B being-designed for use in determining the rise to foot and the other scale and its complementary slide C and arm B being for use in the making of jacks and hip-cuts. The slides C are movable on thebottoms .of the recesses g and in the direction of the length of the body and are provided with reduced inner portions t, disposed in the slots e of the body. The bolts E, which pivotally connect the links D to the slides C, extend loosely through the slides,
Fig. 4, and are threaded at their outer endsl to receive the wing-nuts F. These latter bear against the outer sides of the slides and are arranged entirely within the recesses g of the body, this in order to prevent them from interfering with the manipulation of the body when the same is laid fiat on a surface.
l In virtue of the construction of my@ novel bevel and T-square it will be observed that the arms B may be moved independently of each other with their complementary links D and slides C, and bythe use of the slides, in conjunction with the graduated scales f,^various angles may be found and the framing of roofs and similar work thereby materially facilitated. It will also be observed that in order to fix the arms B with respect to the body it'is simply necessary to set the wingnuts F against the faces of the slides C, so as clamp the slides against the body.
I have entered into adetailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment vof my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to rsuch specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall ywithin the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s*- 1. In an instrument of the character described, the combination of a body provided with graduated scales, arms pivotally connected to the body and movable independently of each other, slides movable on the body, and adapted to be used in conjunction with the graduated scales, and links interposed between and connecting the arms and the slides.
2. In a combined bevel and T-square, the combination of a body provided at its opposite sides with graduated scales, arms pivotally connected to the body at one end thereof, and arranged to be opened to positions at right angles to the body, and also arranged to move independently of each other, slides movable on the body and adapted to be used in conjunction with the graduated scales, and links interposed between and connecting the arms and the slides.
3. In an instrument of the character described, the combination of a body having a recess g in one side, an arm pivotally connected to the body, a slide movable in the recess of the body, a link pivotally connected to the l arm, a bolt connecting the link and the slide and threaded at its outer end, and a nut mounted`on said threaded end of the bolt and arranged entirely within the recess of thebody.
4. In an instrument of the character described, the combination with a body having a space d and slots a disposed at right angles to the said space d, and also having recesses f/ in its opposite sides, and graduated scales on the bottoms ofsaid recesses, arms pivotally connected to the body at one end thereof' and movable independently of cach other, and adapted to take into the space (l ot' the body, slides movable in the recesses g of the body, links pivotally connected to the arms, bolts connecting said links and the slides and threaded at their outer ends, and nuts mounted on said threaded ends of the bolts and arranged entirely within the recesses g of the body.
In testimony'whereoiI have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
