UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'MENZO RICH, on ADDISON, NEW YORK.
FILE FOR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,181, dated May 31 1904.
Application filed. January 21, 1904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MENZO RICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Addison, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files for Papers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in' the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in files or cases for holding papers and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be of simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive construction, which may be readily adjusted to receive packets or bundles of different sizes and thicknesses, and which is well adapted for the use intended.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the inner side of the device in its opened position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device in one of its folded positions. 7 Fig. 4 is a vertical or longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 5 is a horizontal or transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings the numeral 10 denotes ablank stamped or cut, preferably, from a single piece of paper, cardboard, leather, cloth, fabric, or any other suitable sheet material and comprising a central body portion 12, having flaps 13 and 14 on its sides and a flap 15 on its lower end. The said blank when folded as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings is adapted to form a rectangular-shaped case or file having an open top or upper end. The body portion 12, which is rectangular in shape, forms the front of the case or file, and the flaps 13, 14, and 15 form the sides, back, and lower end or bottom. Each of said flaps 13, 14, and 15 has a portion adjacent to the PAPERS- Serial No. 190,066. (No model.
body 1 formed with a series of parallel grooves or creases 16, arranged at an equal distance apart and along any of which said flaps may be folded, as illustrated. When the blank is folded, one or more of the narrow strips 17, formed between said creases 16, provide the sides and ends of the case or file, and the remaining portions, 18, of the said flaps overlap each other and provide the back of the case or file. By this construction it will be seen that the case or file may be adjusted to receive packets or bundles of papers or the like of any desired thickness and that the width and length of the body portion of the case may also be varied to receive papers of diflerent sizes. Attached to the inner side of the blank, preferably longitudinally, are one or more spacing or dividing sheets or leaves 19, of some suitable flexible material, which are adapted to separate the papers or other contents of the case or file from each other, if so desired.
The construction, operation, and ad vantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be seen that the device may beput to various uses. When used as a file, any suitable data as to its contents may be placed upon the outside of the front portion 12, and it provides a neat compact rectangular packet the contents of which will be well protected and preserved and at the same time very accessible. The device is also very convenient for carrying papers in ones pocket.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A file for papers or the like, consisting of a blank comprising a rectangular body portion having side flaps along its longitudinal side edges and a bottom flap at its lower end, said flaps having a series of parallel creases adjacent to said body portion,- along which said In testimony whereof I have herennto'set flaps are adapted to be folded to vary the thickmy hand in presence of two subscribing Witness of the file, and spacing leaves or sheets nesses.
secured at one end to the body portion of said MENZO RICH. 5 blank adjacent to one of said side flaps and Witnesses:
having their free edges terminating short of J. H. KUHL,
the other side flap, substantially as described, N. N. GARDNER.
