Be it known that I, PHILIP H. LONG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lockets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in lockets, the object being to so construct such an article that a material saving of precious metal may be effected without decreasing to any appreciable extent the strength or stiffness of the backs or lids at such place or places where stiffness or strength is required. In closing a locket it is the usual practice to force the lids or backs together by pressing on the centers thereof, and unless said lids or backs are made of metal of considerable thickness they are apt to yield and bend. To overcome this tendency and at the same time allow the article to be made of comparatively thin metal, I solder or otherwise secure to the inner sides of said back a plate made of the same metal of which the backs are formed and preferably of ornamental shape, thereby adding to the appearance of the finished article and at the same time effecting a considerable saving of precious metal and adding strength and stiifness where such are most required.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a locketin its open adjustment and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same in its closed adjustment.

Referring to the drawings, A B represent the backs or lids of a locket, preferably constructed of gold or other precious metal and of any desired shape or size and having secured thereto a link C for attachment to a ribbon or chain and with the catch or lock D for holding the locket in its closed adjustment, said lids or backs being hinged, as shown at E. On the inner face of each back or lid I solder or otherwise secure a plate F, preferably in the form of a star, this plate being also made of gold or of the same material as those out of which the lids are formed, whereby the appearance of the finished article is greatly enhanced and the lids materially strengthened or stiffened at those points subjected to strain or pressure when being shut or closed. By thus constructing the locket a material saving is effected in the quantity of metal used, while at the same time the backs or lids are much stronger or stiffer than if the same quantity of metal were used and equally distributed throughout the article-in other words, is much stronger and stiffer than in the case where each lid or back is made in one piece instead of two.

Should it be desired to ornament one of the lids or backs with a stone or jewel, as is usually the case, I secure to the ornamental plate F the disk or plate G, whereby is afforded suf- {icient metal for the setting and of sufficient size and diameter as to form a center for the star or ornamental plate.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A locket, the sameconsisting of two hinged backs or lids made of comparatively thin metal, and a metal plate permanently secured to the center of each lid and having a plurality of arms radiating from the center, said arms terminating between the inner rim and central portion of the locket, and a disk or plate secured to one of the said first-named plates and forming a center for a setting, substantially as shown and described.
