JEWEL-MOUNTING.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, ZARE WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ewel-Mountings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to jewel mountings for combs, barrettes, and other similar articles constructed of Celluloid. In this class of structures the base is required to be of dark Celluloid representing tortoise shell .in color and markings. When however armaments, and particularly stones, are applied thereto their brilliancy is greatly impaired by the dark base.

The primary object of my invention is to increasing the brilliancy of the ornamental members of the mounting, and my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described 'and made the subject matter of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this specication, Figure l, is a front elevation of my mounting embodied in a comb whose teeth are shown partially broken away, and wherein a por tion of the exterior ornamentation is broken away, Fig. 2, a front elevation ot a portion of the outer ornamentation with certain stones omitted, Fig. 3, an edge view of the same,'F ig. 4, a rear elevation of the portion shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 5, a section of the complete mounting on line a' x of Fig. l, Fig. 6, a rear elevation of a modied form ot' outer ornamentation, and Fig. 7, a face view of a barrette to which the auxiliary strip is aplied. In the present instance my invention is embodied in a comb whose back A constitutes a setting base, and consists of the usual dark or brown celluloid resembling tortoise shell. Fused to the base A is a comparatively thin strip of Celluloid or other material B which is white or of a color lighter than the base. The base and strip are bored out to form cavities ZJ to receive stones C which are fused therein. Obviously when the member B is of considerable thickness the borings would not extend into the member A. The stones C may, however, be entirely omitted if desired, but with a corre- Specication of Letters Patent.

Over the strip B are mounted a. plurality of stones or gems arranged in any preferred design. Herein the stones are thus mounted. A plurality of cup settings D are soldered together side by side as at E or the cups may be formed integral with each other in series. These strips G and H are, in Figs. l, 2, and 4, arranged in horizontal and vertical intersecting series forming series ot' openings or interstices I through which the ornaments C, and the portions of the strip B around the ornaments, are exposed. In Fig. 6 is shown another arrangement of the cup strips G', H. Stones or gems J are mounted in the cup settings in the usual manner by bending the setting prongs K into engagement with the margins ot' the stones J. Certain of the settings D are provided with openings L to admit rivets M which pass through the strip B and base A to retain the setting members against the strip.

In Fig. 7 the base A of the mounting is formed by a barrette to whose face is xed the strip B. To this structure the setting strips are applied as already described.

It will be observed that the strip B forms a glossy and bright background for the ornaments C and J whereby their brilliancy and coloring are enhanced.

What I claim is,-

l. In an article of jewelry, the combination with a base forming the body of such article, of a strip lighter in color than the base fixed to the base, and a plurality of or naments resting upon the face oi the strip and settings for said ornaments with interstices through which said strip is exposed.

In an article of jewelry, the combination with a Celluloid base forming the body of such article, of ornaments connected with the base, and a strip of Celluloid of lighter color than the base intermediate the ornaments and the base and settings for said ornaments with interstices through which said strip is exposed.

3. In an article of jewelry, the combination with a base, of a strip lighter in color than the base fixed to the base and provided with a series of cavities, ornaments seated in the cavities, and ornaments connected with the base and resting upon the strip and settings for said ornaments with interstices through which said strip is exposed.

In an article of jewelry, the combina.- tion with a base, of a strip lighter in color than the base fixed to the base, settings connected with each other in series and arranged to form interstices resting upon the strip, ornaments in the settings, ornaments in said strip and rivets connecting the settings with the base.

In au article of jewelry the combination with a. Celluloid base, of a Celluloid strip lighter in color than the hase fixed to the base and provided with cavities, ornaments seated in the cavities, settings connected with each other in series and arranged to form interstiees resting upon the strip With the 15 ornaments below the interstices, ornaments in the settings, and means for Connecting the settings With the base.
