' PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH S. NEWLIN, OF VARNVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ARMAND MAY, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,915, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed September 30, 1908. Serial No. 175,202. (No model.)
To all whom, it 1111a, concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. NEWLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Varnville, in the county of Hampton and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in lamp-chimneys; and its object is to provide a glass chimney formed of sections which are adapted to be held together by means of springs of novel construction and arrangement, this formation of the lamp-chimney permitting the same to readily expand or contract withoutbeing fractured. The parts of the chimney can also be readily detached, so as to enable them to be readily cleaned.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form .of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a chimney constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the chimney-sections. Fig. 3 is a-plan view of a chimney constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 4: is a detail view of the top spring employed.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l 1 are similar lamp-sections, each of which is preferably one-half the size of a complete lamp-chimney and when placed together form a chimney of ordinary appearance. The base 2 of the chimney-to wit, that portion below the bulge 3is inclosed by means of a coiled spring 4, while the upper end of the chimney is provided with securing means of novel construction. This comprises a V shaped spring 5, from which extend oppositely-am ranged semicircular arms 6, terminating in extensions 7. As the tempered portion of the upper fastening device is contained solely within the V-shaped portion 5, it will be understood that the heat from the lamp will not affect the spring, and the arms 6 will serve to hold the two chimney-sections together at all times. The coiled spring 4, arranged at the lower end of the chimney, will remain unaffected by the heat, for the reason that air is free to circulate therethrough and prevents the temperature from rising to a point where the spring can be injured. When it is desired to take the chimney apart, the spring 4 can be readily slipped from the lower end thereof and the extension 7 "can be spread apart, so as to enable the upper fastening device to be slipped from the chimney. The two sections of the lamp-chimney can then be read ily cleaned on the inside and outside and can be again reassembled by placing their edges together and replacing the springs thereon. It will be understood that a chimney of this character can be readily constructed and is much more durable than those of the ordinary form.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. In a lamp-chimney, the combination with similar separable sections; of a spring adjacent one end thereof, and oppositely-arranged curved arms extending from the spring and arranged to inclose the sections and automatically bind them together.
2. An attachment for separable lamp-chimneys comprising a spring, and oppositely-arranged normally contracted curved arms extending therefrom.
3. In a lamp-chimney, the combination with similar separable sections; of a V shaped spring adjacent one end thereof, and oppositely-arranged semicircular arms extending from said spring and inclosing the sections,
said arms being held by the spring normally clamped upon the sections to bind them together.
4. The combination With a lamp-chimney formed of similar separable sections; of a spring inclosing one end of the chimney, a V- shaped spring near the other end, oppositelyarranged curved arms extending from said spring and inclosing the sections, said spring serving to hold the arms normally clamped IO upon the sections, and extensions to the arms forming handles.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH S. NEWLIN. Witnesses:
