To all whom it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIs T. I/VRIGHT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Keswick, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roasting-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of roasting-furnaces described in my United States Patent N 0. 629,023, dated July 18, 1899. In my present construction I simplify the construction in said apparatus and at the same time render it more effective.
My invention therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken central vertical section of the apparatus, showing the hollow shaft and the stirring-arms in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper end of the hollow shaft. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the lower end of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through one of the hollow arms.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the furnace proper having the hollow outer shaft 2 and the inner pipe 3. Said hollow shaft carries the hollow stirring-arms 4, upon which are secured the rabbles 5, which stir the material over the floors 6. Within said stirringarms are branch pipes 7, open at the end and discharging into the hollow stirring-arms and supported therein by spiders 8. The pipes 7 are connected with and receive water from the inner pipe 8.
The construction thus far described is not novel, being shown in my United States Patents No. 629,023, above referred to, and N 0. 697,062, dated April 8, 1902. In my present invention I introduce the water into the inner pipe 3 from the bottom by means of a feed-water pipe 9, said inner pipe 3 being closed at the top, and I discharge the heated water at the top by a discharge-pipe 10. he hollow shaft now no longer has a stepbearing, but is rotatably supported on roller-bearings 11. It is closed at the bottom around the inner pipe 3. Said inner pipe 3 is con nected with the feed-pipe 9 by a gland 12. In like manner the hollow shaft 2 is connected with the discharge-pipe 10 by a gland 13.
The advantages of the above construction are: First, the water in all cases follows the natural law of ascending as it becomes heated, whereas in my former construction the feedwater in the innermost pipe is compelled to descend as it becomes heated. The circulation in the present construction is therefore more rapid and the cooling effect greater. Secondly, a greater volume of water can be supplied in the same space, for the feed-water has now no longer to double back upon itself in the hollow shaft. Thirdly, the insertion of the cold-feed-water pipe into the middle of the hollow shaft tends to cool the water at the top of said shaft, and thus to reduce the ascensive force. For all of the above reasons the circulation is better with the present construction, and less water is required to aecomplish the same result- The construction is also simpler and cheaper.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination, with a floor, of a central hollow shaft, a hollow arm communieating therewith and carried thereby over the floor, a pipe in said hollow shaft, a conduit connected with said pipe and discharging into said hollow arm, a feed-pipe leading upward to, and connected. with, the bottom of said inner pipe and a discharge-pipe connected with the top of said hollow shaft, substantially as described.
