Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN BARROW, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Go lumbiana, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in boilers and more particularly to a steam boiler of the locomotive and portable type having either an open or water bottom thereon and my object is to improve the efficiency and durability thereof by providing positive and constant circulation of the water surrounding the fire box, especially at the bottom of the boiler.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of water tubes in the fire box above the fire, and a still further object resides in the provision of additional water tubes on the outside of the boiler connected with said other tubes to pass the water thereto which has been drawn from the bottom of the boiler.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a more uniform temperature and greater freedom for expansion and contraction, thereby reducing the liability of the stay bolts leaking or breaking, the tubes to leak, and other defects caused chiefly by unequal expansion and contraction, and a still further object is to provide a construction so that the various parts shall be free to expand or contract without injurious strain upon the parts to which they are connected.
A still further object resides in the provision of a device, any of the parts of which may be readily replaced without the removal or injury of the adjoining parts, and a still further object resides in providing a device which is comparatively simple in construction, thereby readily and cheaply manufactured, and one which is very effective and useful in operation.
\lVit-h these and other objects in view,,my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming'a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the boiler. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof partly in section, and, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section asseen on line 33, Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refor to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates the usual wagon top wrapper plate forming the main body of the boiler, to the forward end of which is secured the inner end of a cylindrical shell 2, said shell being provided adjacent its outer end with a tube plate 3, thereby providing a chamber 4: between the extreme outer end of said shell and said plate which forms a smoke chamber. Mounted within the wrapper plate 1 and spaced from the sides, top and bottom thereof, is a fire box wrapper plate 5, said wrapper plate 5 having the outer end thereof provided with the tube plate 6, and a plu rality of fire tubes 7 extending longitudinally through the shell 2 have their inner ends mounted in said tube plate 6, while the outer ends thereof are mounted in the tube plate 3 adjacent the outer end of said shell, whereby the products of combustion from the fire box may be conveyed to the chamber 4;, from whence they may be passed to the outer air through an opening 8 formed in the shell 2 above said chamber 4;.
The fire box wrapper plate 5 has the rear end thereof provided with a rear plate 9 and extending transversely of said fire box adj acent the bottom thereof are the front and rear bars 10 and 11, respectively, which bars support a plurality of grate bars 12 above the bottom of the wrapper plate 5, thereby fbrming an ash chamber 13 immediately below said grate bars. "vided therein the upper and lower openings 14 and 15 forming, respectively, the fire door and ash door openings, and an additional rear plate 16 is provided for the rear end of the wrapper plate 1 which has mounted thereon in alinement with the openings 14 and 15, respectively, the fire and ash doors 17 and 18. The fire door 17 opens downwardly, the same being pivotally mounted on a horizontally disposed shaft 19 mounted on said plate 1.6, and said door carries thereon, the balancing weights 20, where: by the same may be readily retained in either a closed or open position, as desired. Said door 17 has also formed on the inner face thereof, a lining plate 21, the purposes of which appear obvious. v
or any preferred type, said wrapper plate Mounted in the rear plate 16 of the wrapper 1 in a bushing 22 is the inner end of afeed pipe 23, said pipe extending through the wrapper 1 and the shell 2 to a point adjacent the forward end of the latter and being supported by means of a bracket or keeper 24 in said shell, whereby water may be readily fed to the boiler for circulation therethrough; and disposed between the bottom of the fire box plate 5 and the bottom of the wrapper plate 1 is a plurality of circulating tubes 25 which extend from points adjacent the throat plate 26 through the rear plate 16, said last referred to tubes 25 being provided throughout their length with a plurality of perforations 27. The ends of the tubes 25 beyond the rear plate 16 are mounted in a lower header 28, said header extending transversely of the boiler and to points adjacent the side faces of the wrapper 1, and mounted in the upper face of said header 28, and extending vertically thereof adjacent its ends, are the additional circulating tubes 29. The upper ends of the vertical circulating tubes 29 are mounted in the lower faces of a pair of upper headers 30, said last referred to headers having also mounted therein the rear ends of a plurality of circulating tubes 31 which extend through the upper portion of the fire box and have their forward ends mounted in the front plate 6 of said fire box. In mounting these circulating tubes in any of the plates and the headers, the same are expanded therein by any means desired, but in the instance of the tubes 31 extending through the rear plates 9 and 16, exception is made. In this instance, the tubes or collars 32 are ex panded in said plates 9 and 16, said tubes or collars being of a slightly greater diameter that the normal diameter of the tubes 31, so that the same may fit loosely therein and thus compensate for the free expansion of said tubes 31 independent of the fire box. The outer face of the header 28 is provided with a plurality of hand-holes 33 opposite the ends of the tubes 25, and the header 30 is provided on its upper and outer faces with the hand-holes 3 1 and 35, respectively, opposite the tubes 29 and 31, whereby entrance may be readily had to said headers when repairs are necessary or for any other desired purposes. The boiler is also provided with the additional hand-holes 36 and 37 whereby the circulating tubes 31 and the feed tube 23, respectively, may be readily placed in position and facilitation gained in the cleaning and repairing of the same.
The wrapper plate 1 is provided on its upper face with a steam dome 38 of the usual being provided with a plurality of openings 39, whereby steam from the boiler proper may readily enter said dome, where it may be conveyed to any desired place for any desired purpose, whatsoever. Disposed on each side of the fire box plate 5 so as to extend the full height and substantially the full length thereof, is a dividing plate 40, said plates being secured to the wrapper plate and extending between the throat plate 26 and the outer or forward tube plate 6 of said fire box plate, is a similar dividing plate 11, which plates are adapted to separate the two currents of water which are known to exist in any body of water to which heat is applied on one side only. By so separating these two currents, each will move with the least possible resistance, and thus the velocity and steaming capacity will be greatly increased. Furthermore, the bottom of the wrapper 1 is provided with a pipe flange 42 for the blow-off, and the steam dome 38 is also provided with a pipe flange 43 for the main steam pipe.
I/Vhile I have herein referred to my invention as being particularly applicable to boilers of the locomotive and portable type and my drawings show a portable boiler with a water bottom, it will be understood that the same is capable of being embodied in boilers of other types. Furthermore, although I have shown the water tubes in my drawings extending longitudinally of the fire box and have shown a pair of upper headers 30, it will be understood that said tubes may extend transversely of the fire box and a single upper header provided, if desired. In this connection, it must be stated that Various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without sacrificing any of the advantages or departing from the spirit of the invention.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved boiler of the portable type wherein a positive circulation of water around the fire box will be provided, particularly at the bottom thereof. It will further be seen that my improved boiler is so constructed as to allow various parts to freely expand or contract without injuring or straining the various parts to which the same are connected and it will still further be seen that the various parts may be quickly replaced without the removal or injury to the adjoining parts. It will still further be seen that I have provided a boiler wherein a more uniform temperature and greater freedom for expansion and contract-ion is provided, thereby reducing the liability of leaking or breaking of various parts and other defects caused chiefly by unequal expansion and contraction. Furthermore, it will be seen that my device is extremely durable in construction and highly efficient in every respect.
While I have particularly shown the tubes 31 having their ends mounted in the wall 6, it will be understood that, if desired, the
same may extend therebeyond to any desired distance so that the water and steam passing therethrough may be delivered nearer to the smoke box, and arch fire brick may be used in the fire box supported by these tubes to aid the combustion of the fuel.
"What I claim is 1. A boiler of the class described, comprising an outer shell, a fire box casing mounted therewithin and spaced from the walls of said shell to form a water space therearound, fire tubes extending from the front wall of said casing to a point adjacent the forward portion of said shell, water circulating tubes having the forward ends thereof mounted in the front wall of said casing and extended loosely through the rear wall of said casing and the rear wall of said shell to points therebeyond, additional circulating tubes disposed below said casing and extending beyond the rear wall of said shell, and means connecting the first and last referred to circulating tubes.

prising an outer shell, a fire box casing mounted therewithin and spaced from the inner walls of said shell to provide a water space therein, fire tubes extending from said casing to a point adjacentthe forward end of said shell, sleeves connecting the rear walls of said casing and shell, circulating tubes extending loosely through said sleeves and having the forward ends thereof mounted in the front wall of said fire box. the rear ends of said tubes being extended beyond the rear wall of said shell, additional circulating tubes disposed immediately below said casing and also, extended through the rear wall of said shell, and communicating means between said first and last referred to circulating tubes.
3. A boiler of the class described, comprising an outer shell, a fire box casing mounted therewithin and spaced from the inner walls of said shell to provide a water space therein, fire tubes extending from said casing to a point adjacent the forward end of said shell, sleeves connecting the rear walls of said casing and shell, circulating tubes extending loosely through said sleeves and having the forward ends thereof mounted in the front wall of said fire box, the
rear ends of said tubes being extended beyond the rear wall of said shell, additional circulating tubes disposed immediately below said casing and also extended through the rear wall of said shell, headers mounted on the outer ends of said first and last referred to circulating tubes, and additional outer circulating tubes connecting said headers.
4. A boiler of the class described, comprising an outer shell, a fire box casing mounted therewithin and spaced from the walls of said shell to form a water space therearound, fire tubes extending from the front wall of said casing to the forward portion of the shell, water circulating tubes having the forward ends thereof mounted in the front wall of said casing and extended loosely through the rear wall of said casing and the rear wall of said shell to points therebeyond, means connecting the rear walls of said casing and shell and forming bearings for said tubes, additional circulating tubes disposed below said casing and extending beyond the rear wall of said shell, and connecting means between said circulating tubes.
5. A boiler of the class described, comprising an outer shell, a fire box casing mounted therewithin and spaced from the walls of said shell to provide a water space therearound, fire tubes extending from the front wall of said casing to the forward portion of the shell, water circulating tubes having the forward ends thereof mounted in the front wall of said shell and extending loosely through the rear walls of said casing and shell to points therebeyond, connecting means between said rear walls forming bearings for said circulating tubes, additional circulating tubes disposed below said casing and having the rear ends thereof disposed beyond the rear wall of said shell, headers formed on the extended ends of the upper and lower circulating tubes, and connecting tubes between said headers.
