HENRY T. HAZARD, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,393, dated May 1'7, 1904.
Application filed August 14, 1902. Serial No. 119,670- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. HAZARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in Suspender-ends, and the objects are to pro vide means to lengthen the suspender when the wearer stoops forward or sits down, to provide extra support at the front of the trousers and cause them to be held well up in front while the wearer is standing erect or walking, to provide extra support in front for the support of the drawers to give ease and comfort thereby to the wearer, to prevent the trousers from unduly bagging at the knees or wearing out in the seat, to keep the shoulder-straps well up on and prevent them from falling olf the shoulders, to prolong the lifetime of the Suspender, and to prevent pulling off the buttons on the trousers to which they are attached. I accomplish these objects by the means described herein and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front View of a pair of suspenders embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view of a Suspender-end detached from the right-hand shoulder-strap. Fig. 3 is a plan of the slotted plate I) and also a plan of the web-engaging loop E. Fig. 4k is a central longitudinal section of a suspender-end made of webbing.
In the drawings, A represents the usual shoulder-straps-A the left shoulder-strap and A the right sh0ulder-strapthe length of these straps being regulated by any suitable means, such as the usual slide-buckles B. The front suspender-ends, composed of appropriate webbing C, are secured to the shoulderstrap by means of the slotted plate I), having three slots D, D", and D therein, the upper slot, 1), being adapted to receive the shoulderstrap, the slot D for the passage therethrough of the webbing C through which it renders, and the slot 1) lying at an angle to the other slots and at right angles to the web C as it runs from the loop E on the button-tab F (while the suspender is in place on the wearer) to cause the web to lie flat when passed therethrough and sewed to the slotted plate, providing means to secure one end of the web to the slotted plate.
E represents a metallic loop to which the button-tab F for buttoning to the front button is firmly secured. The web C forms a connection between the slotted plate and metallic loop as follows: One end is secured by sewing or otherwise to the slotted plate after passing the same through the slot D therein. It is then run through the loop E, then passed up and through the slot 1)", and terminates in a button-loop C. Secured to the loop E is the front button-tab F, having buttonhole F for attachment to the front button of the trousers and is adapted to carry twice the strain placed on the button-loop (1" secured to the side button.
A cord may be substituted for the suspenderend webbing, and in that case tubes or pulleys should be used instead of the metallic loop and the slotted plate, the same being secured in the usual manner to the ends of the shoulder-straps and to the front bi1tton-tabs,witl1out departing from the spirit of my invention, which consists in the novel arrangement of the suspender-ends whereby the sus 'iender will lengthen out when the wearer stoops forward or sits down and effects other desirable results, as I have hereinbefore stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A Suspender-end attachment comprising an attaching device and a flexible front end connection having one end secured to said device and thence extending downwardly and returned toward the point of attachment, and through the attaching device, said device constructed to diverge the free ends of the connection and to normally direct the folded portion thereof toward the front of the wearer, and means for connecting the bight of said folded portion with the front trousersbutton.
2. A Suspender-end attachment comprising an attaching device and a flexible front end returned upon itself and passed through said 0 device in a direction which adapts it for ready buttoning to the side button of the trousers, said attaching device having means for normally diverging the ends of the flexible connection and directing the folded end toward the front trousers-button; and a button-tab connected to the bight of the folded portion and designed to attach to said front button.
3. The combination with shoulder-straps, of plates secured to the front ends thereof said plates having two upper parallel slots and a third slot lying at an angle thereto; a front button-tab provided at its upper end with a loop; and a flexible member having one end nesses.
