Be it known that I, PHILLIPP SCHOLTES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Oliver` in the county oi' Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specilication.

My invention pertains to hammers of the nail-placing type; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in section and partly in eleva* tion, of a hammer-head constructed in accordance with my invention, the sectional portion being taken on the line e a' of Fig'. 2. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line y 'z/ ot' Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line e e of Fig. 1.

The head is shown as having a poll a, an eye Z), and a hatchet-blade c; but I desire it understood that the blade may be omitted or claws used in lieu of the same, also that the head may be formed integral with the handle or connected thereto in any approved manner without involving' a departure :from the scope of my invention.

O is a longitudinally-disposed wall formed integral with the poll a of the head at the inner side of said poll and having a transverse notch a7, in its edge; D, a longitudinal integral wall arranged parallel to the wall O and having a recess a in its inner side, Fig. 2; E, a recess formed in the inner side of the poll at the inner ends of the walls O D; F, a kerl formed in the inner side of the poll a in aline- Inent with the recess c of wall D and gradually increased in depth toward its forward end, as best shown in Fig. 1, and Gr a spring, preferably of brass, arranged in the recess c ot' wall D and pivotally connected, adjacent to one end, to said wall D through the lnedium of a rivet F, as shown, or other suitable means.

When it is desired in practice to use the hammer in the ordinary manner-27. e., to drive nails placed `with the hand-the spring Gr is pushed, through the medium ot a nail or other device, down into the kert' F, where it will remain, because ot' the tendency ot' its free end to spring laterally. With the spring in such position there is no liability oil it being injured in the event of the user missing a nail which he is driving.

When the hamm er is to be used to place nails precedent to driving the same home, a nail or other pointed instrumentis placed in the notch d of wall C and in engagement with an aperture g in the spring and is used to move the spring out of the kerr F and into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

With the spring Gr in the last mentioned position it will be observed that when a nail is placed with its head in the recess E and its shank between the free portion o1E the spring and the wall C said nail will be securely held and may be readily placed by a light blow, also that after the nail is placed the hammer may be readily lifted out of engagement with the nail and used to drive the same home.

The rear end of the spring Gr is beveled, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to permit 'of the spring being placed in the kerf F and yet prevent it from moving downwardly beyond the position shown in Fig. 1.

It will be readily appreciated from the foregoing that my improvementsadd butvery little to the cost of a hammer and do not render the same cumbersome orunsightly in appearance.

I have entered into adetailed description o1 the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferr-ed embodiment ot' my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly tall within the scope of my invention as claimed.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"

1. In a hammer-head, the combination with a poll having' longitudinal walls, at one side,
