UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. REESE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WRITING-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,551, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed February 24, 1904. Serial No. 195,052. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. REEsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pens, the object being to provide a pen which will enter the ink well or bottle only a limited or predetermined distance, and the further object is to prevent ink from reaching the penholder.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a pen having a tongue out and struck inward from the body of the pen at or approximately at right angles in position to strike the bottle-neck to limit the insertion of the pen thereinto and the slot formed by cutting out the tongue, serving to prevent ink from running back upon the holder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective. Fig. 2 is an inverted longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
A represents the pen, and 2 is a tongue out from the stock of which the pen is formed and bent inwardly from the inner end thereof at right angles to the body of the pen, leaving a slot 1 and projecting sufficiently far from the inner edges of the pen to form a stop to prevent the pen from entering a bottle-neck beyond that point, the tongue striking against the edge of the bottle and forming a stop to prevent its further insertion thereinto and preventing the ink from flowing back on the holder. At the same time the slot prevents an excess of the writing fluid from accumulating upon it and primarily prevents it from falling back upon the penholder, the excess of ink flowing off through the slot 1.
It might be added that the stop may perform the additional function of preventing the pen from being inserted too far into the penholder.
A pen of this character can be easily and quickly made at a trifling additional expense, and, above all, is most effectual in the performance of its functions.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a pen having a tongue out therefrom and bent inwardly from one end of the slot formed by said out, said tongue extending beyond the edge of the pen thereby forming a stop to limit the insertion of the pen into a bottle and preventing the flow of ink from reaching the holder.
, 2. As an article of manufacture, a writingpen having a tongue out therefrom and bent inwardly from the upper end of the slot from which the tongue is formed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY O. REESE.
