PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCHOPKE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CIGARETTE-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,476, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed May 29, 1903. Serial No. 159,257. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beitknown that I, CHARLEs SGHOPKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, 7
and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to an improved hand-actuated device for the rolling of paper cigarettesthat is, cigarettes having a paper wrapper filled with tobacco-the object of the invention being to provide a compact roller that may be conveniently carried in the owners pocket one that is simple of construction, easily operated, durable, and inexpensive as to manufacture.
.To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, the same being illustrated opened and having therein a cigarette paper or wrapper and the tobacco filler for the making of a cigarette. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the roller with its jaws or sections opened. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the roller closed, illustrating the position of the rolling-ribbon after the forming of a cigarette; and Fig. 4is a detail view of one section or jawof the frame or casing.
In the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 are used to designate two hinged sections or jaws, which constitute the frame, casing, or body of the roller, said sections or jaws being united at their bottom edge by means of the hinge 3. The sections or hinged jaws are stamped or formed of an ogee shape, the concavity formed by the inner lower concave surfaces providing, when the sections or jaws are closed, a chamber 4 within which the cigarette 4 is rolled. Each section or jaw in length slightly exceeds that of the cigarette to be formed therein, so that any standard size cigarette paper or wrapper may be used withln the device. To the ends of each section or jaw is attached an end plate 5, which plates when brought together by the closing of the said hinged sections or jaws 1 2 close the ends of the chamber 4 to prevent the escape of the tobacco therefrom. The end plates extend a slight distance above the con vex surfaces or shoulders 6 and are connected by the curved guide-plates 7 8, an opening or passage-way 9 being thus formed between the under face of the plates 7 8 and the upper surface of the shoulder portion 6 of the sections or jaws 1 2. Through these openings or passage-ways works the forming ribbon or apron 10, to each end of which is attached a plate or finger-piece 11. These plates or finger-pieces are of such thickness as to prevent the ribbon or apron being drawn through the openings or passage -ways 9 when the ribbon or apron has reached the limit of its movement. In fact, said plates or finger-pieces serve as stops for the movement of the said ribbon or apron.
For the formation of a cigarette the ribbon or apron is first pulled outward its full limit, the sections or jaws 1 2 being opened, that portion of the ribbon or apron between the opened sections or jaws being depressed to the bottom of the chamber 4, Fig. 1 of the drawings. A cigarette paper or wrapper 12 is then introduced or placed with its lower edge slightly turned between the clamp sections or jaws, the paper resting against the surface of the ribbon or apron, so as to face the direction of the travel of the said ribbon or apron, which is indicated by the arrow in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings; The proper quantity of tobacco 13 for the formation of the desired cigarette is then placed onto the wrapper within the chamber 4 and the sections or jaws 1 2 closed, said position indicated by Fig. 2 of the drawings. After the closing of the said sections or jaws the operator grasps the finger-piece 11 at the end of the ribbon or apron 10 nearest or closest in to the closed frame and exerts an outward pull thereon, which draws the free or loose portion of the ribbon or apron through the device, the direction of pull being indicated by the arrow on Fig. 2 of the drawings. As the ribbon or apron is drawn through the device the frictional engagement of the cigarette-wrapper therewith causes the said wrapper to be drawn between the closed jaws or sections and to roll within the forming-chamber 4 around the filling of tobacco. It will be understood that prior to exerting an outward pull upon the ribbon or apron the projecting or upper edge or face of the Wrapper has proper adhesive fluid applied thereto in order that the same will adhere to the body of the cigarette when formed. The position of the ribbon or apron after being drawn through the device is clearly indicated by Fig. 3 of the drawings. To remove the rolled cigarette, it is only required to open the closed sections or jaws 1 2.
Havingthus described the invention, What is claimed as new, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is p 1. A cigarette-roller, comprising two hinged jaws shaped to forma rolling-chamber for the cigarette, and having an outwardly-curved bearing-surface at their upper ends, end plates for the jaws terminating at apoint slightly thereabove, transversely-arranged tops con-' nected at their ends to the top of the end plates, and curved upon their inner surface complementary to the curved bearing-surface of the jaws, anda forming-ribbon arranged to pass between saidbearing-surfaees.
2. A cigarette-roller comprising a pair of hinged jaws of ogee shape in cross-sectiomthe upper portion of the inner surface of the jaws forming a smooth transverse bearingsurface, end plates inclosing the ends of the jaws, and terminating at a point thereabove in a transversely-arranged substantially flat top plate, forming a bearing-surface complementary to the bearing-surface of .the jaws, the space therebetween being uninterrupted, through which is arranged to pass a formingribbon.
In1 witness whereof I have hereunto set my hanc.
