IMPROVEMENT IN SADDLES AND HARNESS.
Spccijcatz'on forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 5,930, dated March 24, 1868.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I', R. M. LA RUE, of Andersonvill'e, Franklin county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saddles and Harness; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-v tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to makeland use the same, reference being had to the accom panyin gdrawin gs, forming part of this specification.
This invention relatesto an improvement in saddles and harness, and consists in having a' small drum .and ratchet to which the crupper or other strap is fastened; the length of the crupper or other strap is thus adjustable to any horse. A spring catches in the ratchet and holds the drum.

A A A is a harness tree; B, a drum, in which one end of the crupper-strap is secured. C is a ratchet, turned by the thumbscrew D and held by the spring-pawl E.
The crupper-strap F passes through the slot a in the saddle tree, and is secured to the drum B, and is lengthened by releasing the ratchet U from the pawl E and pulling out the strap. It is shortened by turning the thumb-screw D.
The like arrangement can be applied to any strap of saddle or harness which it is desired to render adjustable, such as stirrup-leathers, and traces, and the like.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure I by Letters Patent, is-
Thedrum B, constructed as described, its front end receiving the terret, and its rear end slotted for the passage ofthe strap of' the harness, when the latter is Wound within the drum upon the shaft of the ratchet C and thumbscrew D, as herein described, for the purpose p specified.
