Be it known that I, RQB-Rr HIRST, of IIudson, in the county of Columbia, .and State of New York, have invented a new'and improved Writing-Pen; and I do hereby declare tlxatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable thoseskilledin the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l

This invention relates to a new and improved attachment for writing-pens, fortlie purpose of retaining or holding a larger qnantity of ink than can be retained by the ordinary simple pen.. i

' The invention consists in applying ahingedfiiap or pallet tothe inner orconca-ve side of the pen; said Hap or pallet extending from the broad or wide portion ofthe pen' to within a short distance of the point'or nib, as hereinafter fully shown and described, -whereby a reservoir for Vink is obtained, the ink allowed to How readily from the pen, when the latter isi'in use, andthe peu rendered capable of being cleaned with facility. v In the accompanying sheet of drawings-` `Figure l represents a longitndinal section of a pen provided with my invention, and taken inthe line zx, iig. 2.

A represents a penwhch may be constructed in the usual way, and of gold or other metal. ,B represents my improvedl attachment, which is a'iiap or pallet corresponding in shape to the outer part of the pen, that is to say, to 1the portieri included between the broad or wide part wand a pointsb, a short distance from the'point or nib, (seciig. 2:) This iiap or plat-e is slightly concave at its inner side, and, at its inner or wide end, it is provided at each side with journals c, which pass through` the two sides of the pen, and4 are allowed to turn freely therein, forming a joint, which, when 4the p en is dry or free from ink, will drop or openwhcn the pen is i held horizontally, concave orinner side downward, and be suspended at right angles with the pen.

Another advantage'my invention` possesses is,.that it does not bear on 'the 4pen-near the point, nor does it restrict lthe spreading of thel same at each side of 4the slit, as is the case with the other attachments, and

I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersIatent* The Hap B, when pivoted at its widest end to the concave side of the pen A, corresponding in shape to the outer part of said pen, and held, thereto, when in use, by atmospheric pressure, asherein described, for the purpose specified. l
