Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. NOYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gould City, in the county of Garfield, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to Wrenches in general, and'more particularlyto the class of ratchet-wrenches, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap and simple form of wrench which may be easily and quicklyadjusted to engage bodies of diiierent sizes and in which the parts may be readily adjusted to feed the head rotatably in either direction as the handle or lever is oscillated.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.

Cooperating with the jaw 11 is a movable jaw 16, having a stem 17, which is passed through the passage 14, the base of the jaw 16 being slightly narrowed and lying in the slot 15, so that as the stem 17 is reciprocated in the passage 14 the jaw 16 will be moved toward and away from the jaw 11. reciprocate the stem 17,` its ends portion opposite to the jaw 16 is threaded and is engaged by a nut 18, having a base-Hange 19, that engages a groove 20 in the lug 21- at the outer side of the base of the jaw 11. As the nut 18 is rotated in one direction the stem is drawn through the passage 14 with the jaw 16 toward the jaw 11, and when the nut is rotated in the opposite direction the stem 17 is forced through the passage in the opposite direction to move the jaw 16 from the jaw 11. During the last-named movement of the stem the nut 18 is held against movement away from the head 10 by engagement of the flange 19 in the groove or channel 20. Y
A handle 22 is provided and has at one end a grip 23 and at the other end an enlargement 24, having a perforation 25 therethrough which forms a bearing for the stern 12 oi' the head 10, a Cotter-pin 26 being engaged through the end of the stem for the well-known purpose.
A. pawl carrier or guide is provided and consists of a housing 27, having a longitudinal cylindrical passage 28 therethrough, the carrier or guide being slotted longitudinaliy at one end, as shown at 29, and having a longitudinal extension 30 at ksaid end at one side of the slot, this extension being designed `for engagement therethrough of a screw 31, which To thus IOO the head, this engagement serving to hold the corresponding end of the guide against movement away from the handle 22. lThe end of the passage 28 farthest from the head 10 is slightly reduced in diameter, as shown at 34, and through said passage or into said passage is passed asubstantially cylindrical pawl 35, having at one end a slightly-enlarged head 36, which is beveled at one side, as shown at 37. Upon the pawl is disposed a helical spring 38, one end of which rests against the head 36, while the other end rests against the shoulder 39, formed by the reduction of the diameter of the passage 28. This helical spring serves to hold the head 36 with its beveled face normallyand yieldably projected from the passage 28 and into engagement with the teeth 13. A pin 4:0 is engaged through the pawl 35 transversely at the opposite end from the head 36 and lies in the slot 29, from which it projects. The pin serves to hold the pawl against rotation, and when the pin 4() is in position to project from one side of the guide 27 the bevel 37 of the head 36 is at one side of the wrench, whilewhen the pin projects from the other side of the guide saidface is at the opposite side of the wrench. With this construction it will be seen that when the head is held and the handle 22 is moved upon the stem 12 in one direction the pawl 35 will engage one ofthe teeth 13 and the head will then be moved It will be understood that in practice modifi? cations of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. Awreneh comprising a handle, a head provided with jaws and having a ratchet wheel and a peripheral groove adjacent to the latter, a guide attached at one end to the handle and having a lip at its opposite end engaged in said groove, said guide having a longitudinal passage therethrough and a transverse slot in its end opposite to the head,a pawl slidably mounted in said passage and having its end adjacent to the head beveled at one side and adapted for engagement with the ratchet-wheel, means Jfor holding the pawl yieldabl y in engagement with the ratchet wheel, and a pin engaged transversely through the pawl and lying in said slot, said pawl being movable with the pin from the slot and rotatable when the pin is thus disengaged.
2. A wrench comprising a head having a fixed jaw and a transverse passage passing beneath the jaw, said head having a slot in its face from which the jaw projects and communicating with the passage, a second jaw having a threaded stem slidably engaged in the passage,
