PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. MAAHAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MOUTHPIECE OR STEM FOR SMOKEHS ARTICLES.
I SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Iatent N G. 757,760, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed December 22. 1902. Serial No. 136,236. Nn modell) To @ZZ whom, it 771,04/ concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Manhattan borough, New York city, lin the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces or Stems for Smokers Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements by which such an article as a pipe or holder for cigars, cigarettes, and the like is made to sit conveniently in the mouth or to the tongue of a smoker and a pleasant delivery of smoke is assured without liability of moisture, nicotin, or objectionable matter entering the mouth.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the 'annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a pipe embodying this'invention and in use. Fig. 2 shows the mouthpiece. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the stem. Fig. 5 shows a modiiication. Fig. 6 is a plan view 'of Fig. 5. Fig. is a sectionai view of a furthermodication. Fig. S is a side view of Fig. 7.
A stem E is shown with smoke channel or bore F. A pipe-bowl is shown at A; but by the word bowl is included not merely a tobacco-receiver, as any funnel or suitably shaped receiving portion for a cigar or the like is included in the invention.
The bowl is shown with stem-section B, having channel C to lead smoke into the stem E. This channel C is shown slanting or inclined downwardly 'to a well or pocket portion D.-
The mouthpiece or tip K has a stem-section I, adapted to screw to or connect with the stem. This mouthpiece has the smoke-channel H and smoke hole or outlet J.
The tip or mouthpiece has a smoke-deflector L, the under part of which is curved to serve as a rest for or position the tongue O of the smoker, the teeth N serving to hold the tip or pipe in the mouth or between lips M. The smoke-hole opens upwardly, and the smoke Q striking the deliector spreads from thence in the mou th. The channel H leads to or and stem-section having smoke-channels.
vor smoke-channel.
safeguard against objectionable matter traveling along the stem.
The channel of the mouthpiece is shown of larger diameter than the channel or bore F of the stem, and `the mouthpiece-channel eX- tends below the stem-channel, or, in other words, the stem-channel is located above the axis or along the upper part of the stem.
In Fig. 5 the outlet J is shown shortened as compared with Fig. 1, the mouthpiece being of somewhat different shape.
In Figs. 7 and 8 the outlet J is shown forked or divided to cause a division or spreading of" the smoke.
It will be obvious from the foregoing description and upon an inspection of the drawings alluded to therein that the improved smokers article includes a bowl provided with a'stem-sectin having a smoke-channei, a stem having a bore of diferential diameter, the end Yportions of the bore being'of greater diameter than the intermediate portion which constitutes a smoke-channel and being eX- tended below the said intermediate portion to constitute wells, the outer well serving to receive the stem-sectign, while the inner one receives a mouthpiece, both the mouthpiece In the,A present instance the smoke-channel in the stem-section opens directly into the interior of the bowl and leads downward and into the outer well at an angle, the result being that any objectionable -matter that is in the pipe is conveyed into said well andwill not pass through the intermediate portion of the bore The inner well ofcourse serves to receive any saliva that may be forced from the mouth, so that such saliva will not bek forced into the bowl.
What I claim as new, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A smokers article including a bowl provided with a stem-section having a smokechannel, a stem having a bore wholly within portions of the bore being of greater diameter than the intermediate portion which constitutes a smoke-channel, and being extended below said intermediate portion to constitute wells, the outer well serving to receive said stem-section, and a mouthpiece fitted mto the lnner well, having a smoke channel, said ,smoke-channel having branches at itsinner end.
3, A' smokers article including a bowl proL vided with a stem-section having a smokechanneL: a stem having a bore wholly within said stem and of dierential diameter, the end portions of the bore being of greater diameter than the intermediate portion which c'onstitutes a smoke-channel, and being extended below said intermediate portion to constitute wells, the outer well serving to receive said stem-section, and the smoke-channel in the latter opening directly into the interior of the bowl and extending downward therefrom at an angle and into said outer well, and'a'mouth- .piece fitted into the inner well, having a smokechannel. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
