PATENT OFFICE.
BERTRAM F. EDWARDS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT POI? GA$-GOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,652, dated April 19, 1904. Application filed July 30, 1 .303. Serial No. 167,549. No model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM F. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved safety gas-cock attachment. Its object is to provide a cheap simple device that may be readily attached to any ordinary gas-cock in use for the purpose of locking the cock when the gas is turned off and preventing the cock being accidentally turned too far.
It consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of gas-cock with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a front view of same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of segmental plate. Fig. 4: is an enlarged top end View of spring-catch and clamp.
A represents a segmental plate secured to the gas-pipe 2 relative to the key 3 by suitable means, as the clamps 4, and having a notch 5, in which the end of a spring-pressed catch 6, carried by the key 3, may engage when the key is turned to out ofi the gas. The catch 6 has-a separate clamp device 7, by which it is secured to the key. The opening movement of the key is limited by the outwardly-turned flanges 8 at the ends of plate A, disposed in the path of the latch.
In operation when it is desired to turn on the gas the operator presses down on the latch 6 to disengage notch 5 and turns the key in the usual fashion. When the key is turned to shut off the gas, the point of the latch slides over the curved surface of plate A and at the right instant drops automatically into the notch. It is then impossible to turn the key in either direction until the latch is pressed down again.
The advantage of this device is its simplicity, its automatic character, and the fact that it can be applied readily to any gas-cock already in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. An attachment for a gas-cock comprising a locking means and means by which it is readily attached to the gas-key, in combination with a keeper and means whereby it is readily attached to the gas-pipe said keeper having a notch to automatically receive the locking member when the latter is brought into line therewith.
2. An attachment for a gas-cock and adapted to be applied to the latter, comprising a member attachable to the key and having a spring-pressed locking device, and a keeper attachable to the gas pipe or fixture and having a notch to receive the spring-pressed looking device of the first-named member when said parts are brought into alinement.
3. An attachment for a gas-cock adapted to be applied thereto and comprising a curved plate and clamps for attaching it to the stationary gas pipe or fixture said plate having a notch; a clamp embracing the gas-key; and a latch pivotally secured to said last-named clamp and having a portion to automatically spring into engagement with said notch when the key is turned to bring the notch and latch into alinement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
