Description

WILLIAM e. HUNTER, or NEWPORT, KENTUCKY'.
Lettere Patent No. 75,762, dated .Marck 24, 1868.
IMPROVED WASHING'MAGHINE- 'tlgi Sartini narra 'tu it than trtta's prima no making pnt rf tige time.
Tl) ALL WI-IOM IT MAY, ONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. HUNTER, of Newport, in the county of Campbell, and State of Kentucky,
have invented a vnew and useiul Improvement in Washing- Machines,'ot` which the following is 'a full and clear description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The nature of my improvement in vwashing machines consists in the arrangement ,within the body of thc machine ot' two series of rollers, one series .being located immediateley above the concave bottom, and the other series pivoted to either end of the machine, radiating downwards; also toa. vibrating iinger-bar pivoted in the lid, and operatedV by a. lever hinged to the outer face of the machine.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the washing-machine.
Figure 2 is a transverse 'section of' the same.
Figure 3 is a. perspective view ot' the vibrating finger-bar.
A. is the body of the washing-machine,'provided with the circular bottom a. The ends bof the machine are planevsurfaces, perpendicular .tethc curved bottomva. The Alid A is hinged to 'the front'otthe body It is perforated in the centre forl the receptionof the cylindrical box B, which has axial arms ]'ournalled in thc lid A. The cylindrical box B is constructed with a diametrical opening, in which the arm C of the vibrating linger-bar D is adjusted, and secured in place by the pian c. Said pin c passes through perforations in the cylindrical box, B, and-arm C. A cross-head E is secured to the arm C within the body A of themachine. It is provided with a. number of fingers, E', which project downward. The two fingers at each end of the cross-head Ediverge to the front and rear, not being in the plane ofthe central ingers. The external end, c', of' the arm C is pivoted to theconnecting-rod G, and the opposite end of the rod Gr is pivoted to the lever H. flhe lever- H is pivoted'to the front end of the body ot' the machineat d. Immediately above the bottom, a, of thc body A, ore the rollers I, journalled in the ends'b of the machine. Series` of radiating rollers, K, placed near and parallel to the ends a ofthe machine, are so journalled that they rotate freely, as do the rollers in the bottom of the machine.
` Operation. The requisite amount of water having been placed in theibody Aoi' the machine, and the clothes to be washed, the lid A is closed andksecuredin place. When the hulk of clot-hes to be operated upon is great, the arm C of the vibra-ting finger-bai` Dis drawn up through the` opening in thecylindricalbox B to such a height that the fingers E E shall be'wcaused to engage the articles being washed without pressing them down upon the rollers I with'too much force to impede the` easy operation of washing, which is accomplished by the operator, whograspsthc free end-of the lever I-I, moving back and forth. The clothes under `the iingersE are pressed over and upon th -rollers as they are moved to and tro, and are worked upon in a manner similar to that undergone when the hands areused'in place of the ingers E.E. The radiating rollers K, while they prevent the bunching up of the clot-beset each end of the machine, serve the same purpose in4 the operation of' washing as do the rollersI i What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The rollers I and K,"tl1ejfvibrating inger-bar D,.ha'vingthe lcross-head E, and fingers E E', the cylindrical box B, pin C, andconnectingwod G, and lever-H, when the same are constructed and arranged substantially as herein described and for the purpose specified.
