SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,451, dated April 19, 1904. Application filed November 22,1902y Serial No. 132,500. (No model.)

falo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedclothes-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of devices which are employed to prevent the accidental displacement of the clothes used as coverings upon beds.

The object of my invention is to provide improved means for the above-named purpose which can be readily applied to bedsteads, which can be economically constructed and of such a nature as not to injure the bedclothes fastened therein,and at the same time present a sightly appearance when in position upon the bed.

To these ends my invention consists of a certain improved construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fastener applied to the back rail of an iron bedstead, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are perspective views of detached detai s.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the base from' which the two uprights 2 and 3 extend vertically and parallel with each other. The outer faces of these uprights are provided with the series 4 and 5 of notches, which extend from the top to the bottom of the uprights.

6 is a support for the uprights, having at its upper end the right-angled arm 7, provided with the channel 8 (see Fig. 5) and longitudinal open-end slot 9. The base 1 of the uprights 2 and 3 rests adjustably in the channel 8 of the support 6 and is held rigidly therein by the bolt 10 and thumb-nut 11. The support 6 has a series of apertures 12 in its length. 13 and 14 are two angular gripping-pieces provided with the apertured lugs 15 15 and 16 16. These gripping devices are rigidly secured around the angular back rail 17 of an iron bedstead, a filling-block 18 being interposed.

The bolts 19 19 are employed to unite and tighten the parts.

On the outer face of the gripping-piece 14 is the longitudinal channel 20, (see Fig. 2,) adapted for the adjustable reception of the support 6, which is held in position by the bolt 21, which passes through one of the apertures 12 in the support and the aperture 22 in the gripping-piece 14.

23 and 24 are the clamping devices to grip and hold the bedclothes. The rear device 23 has its vertical portion provided with the longitudinal channel 25 and slot 26, (see Fig. 4,) and the transverse rib 27 across the channel 25 is adapted for locking engagement with one of the notches 4 of the upright 2, which rides in the channel 25 of the clamping device 23. The bolt 28 and thumb-nut 29 hold the parts in rigid engagement.

The front clampingdevice 24 has its vertical portion provided with the longitudinal channel 30 and slot 31, (see Fig. 3,) and the transverse rib 32 across the channel 31 is adapted for locking engagement with one of the notches 5 of the upright 3, which rides in the channel 30 of the clamping device 24. The bolt 33 and thumb-nut 34 hold the parts in rigid engagement.

35 is an angular head with a headed shank 36, which is in removable engagement with the recess 37 in the upper end of part 24.

In practice one of my improved devices is secured near each end of the rear rail of the bed. The clamping devices 24 are then adjusted to the proper height and the lower end of the bedclothes 38 passed over the same. The ends of a T-shaped strip 39 the width of the bed is next placed in engagement with the angular heads 35, and the horizontal arms 40 of the devices 23 are pressed down against the strip 39 until the clothes are securely held between it and the angular heads 35. rllhe devices 23 are then locked by turning the thumbnuts 29, which holds the bedclothes securely against accidental displacement.

The part which secures my clamping device IOO to the iron bed can be readily changed to adapt it for holding engagement with the frame of a wood bedstead.

I olaim- Y In a bedclothes-holder, the combination of a base, removably secured to the bed-frame on opposite sides thereof, two vertical and parallel uprights upon such base, a vertical clamping device with an upper horizontal arm adjustable upon the vertical upright upon one side of the base, a vertical clamping device with an upper angular head adjustable upon the vertical upright upon the other side of the base, and a'T-shaped strip in engagement with the angular heads and horizontal arms of the vertical clamping devices, for holding the bedclothes between the T-shaped strip and the angular heads, substantially as shown and described.
