Be it .known that we, ELBA A. YooUM and JAMES A. SWTHART, citizens of the lUnited States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and Statel of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumping-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in pumping-jacks for oil-wells; and its'object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character adapted to be readily secured -to the casing of the well and having means whereby a direct pull may be exerted upon the polish-rod.
A further object is to provide propelling `Ineans for the rod which may be operated from a ource of power located at any desired distanc from the Well.
Another object is to employ means of novel construction for securing the polish-rod to the propelling means.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and lcombination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in' the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the jack con-4 nected to a well-casing and to the polish-rod therein. Fig.l 2 is a side elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Referringto the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a Well-casing having a collar 2 at its Aupper end. Blocks 3, having recesses 4 in thelr lnner faces, are arranged at opposite sides of the casing'l'directly below the collar 2, and
these blocks'are secured together by means of bolts 5 or in any other suitable manner. Extending upward from one of the blocks 3 is a standard 6, having a bracket 7 integral therewith,.to the outer end of whichV is pivoted a toothed segment 8. This segment meshes with a rack 9, having a longitudinallyextending groove `10 in its inner face, Within which is arranged th'e-polish-rod 11, which extends into the casing 1.4 The rack is secured to the rod` by means of'clamping-blocks l2, which extend thereover and areV fastened to the rack by meansof clamping-screws 13. A shackle-rod 15 is arranged Within one of a series of apertures 16, formed in the segment v8, and this rod is adapted to be connected to a suitable source of power arranged at any desired distance from the pumping-jack. When the shackle-rod is reciprocated, the segment 8 will, as is obvious, be moved back and forth upon its pivot, thereby imparting a reciprocating motion to the polish-rod.
The jack herein `described can be readily attached to a well-casing, and the rack can also be quickly adjusted upon the lpolish-rod by employing the clamping-blocks l2. (Shown and described.) By arranging the shackle-rod in different apertures 16 the stroke of the polish-rod can be regulated.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention, but we` do not limit ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications' may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and we'therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the s :ope of our invention.
Having thus describel the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1.
