PUMP ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,137, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed October 31, 1888. Serial No. 289,648, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ASHBEL HOLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elwood, in the county of Gosper and State of N ebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump Attachments for Pumping lVater or Oil, called a Spring-Jack and Screw-Adj uster, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invent-ion relates to an attachment for pumps, and has for its object to equalize the power necessary to operate the pump, so that as much power, ornearly as much, is required to depress the rod as to lift the same and the column of water.
The improvement consists of an externallythreaded tube adjustably mounted on the pump-rod, and a spring confined between a fixed stop, and a nut adjustable on said threaded tube, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, an d shown in the annexed drawi1'1g,which is a side view, parts beingbroken away, of a pump embodying my invention.
M represents the upper portion of a pump of ordinary construction, m a vertical extension of the pump, and G a small platform that forms a fixed stop for the lower end of the coil-spring F.
B is the exterually-threaded tube, that is ad- 3' ustable on the pump-rod A, being heldthereon by the jamb-screwl). The nut O, mounted on the threaded tube B, forms an adjustable stop for the upper end of the said coil-spring F, and is turned by suitable means, as a wrench or lever, the latter being passed through the eye W. The tube B is applied to the pump-rod and adjusted to the proper position, being held by the screw 1). The spring 5 F, which is placed between the nut O and the stop G, is compressed, if needs be, by turning the nut 0 down, or the tension on said spring may be lessened by turning the said nut up, as will be readily understood.
The operation of the invention is as follows: hen the pump-rod is depressed, the spring F is compressed, the strength and compression of the spring being proportionate, so that the force required to compress the spring will be equal to or represent the power necessar 1 to lift the additional amount of Water picked up by the piston when the pump-rod is lowered. The power required to raise the pumprod is to be about equal to that expended in depressing the same; hence it will be seen that the force required for operating the pump is equally distributed on the up and the down stroke of the pump-rod, and that said pump can be more uniformly operated by a windmill or other motive power.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the pump-rod and a fixed stop, of the threaded tube adjustable on said pump-rod, a nut adjustable on said tube, and a spring arranged between the said stop and the nut, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the pump rod hav'in g a threaded tube connected therewith, of a nut adjustable 011 said threaded tube, and a spring having connection with andplaeed between said nut and a stop, as G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
