WALTER C. IVESTAIVAY, OF DECORAII, IOIVA.
PLUNGER=ROD FOR PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,882, dated February 12, 1889. I Application filed September 8, 1888. Serial No. 284,859. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER G. Wns'rAwA v, of Decorah, in the county of \Vinneshiek and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plunger-Rods for Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact (.lescription.
The object of my invention is to relieve reciprocating pumps and pumping machinery of strain and sudden jar in starting and when in rapid operation; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Re teroncc is to be had to the accompanying drawings, tormin g a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 shows my invention applied to a common windmillpump with handles for starting and for operating by hand. Fig. 9 is a similar view showing a different application of the handle. Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional elevation showing the cushion and coupling. Fig. i is a transverse sectional view of the same on line :r :11 ot l' ig. 3-3, and Fig. 5 is a sec tional plan view on line 1/ 11 of Fig. 3.
A represents the piston or plunger rod ol' any ordinary wimlmill-pump held in bearings a a, supported upon the pump-boxll. To the upper end ot' the rod A is attached by bolt 1) the section 0. The upper end oi this section is headed, as shown at c. On this section are placed the two plates D D and the coiled spring or cushion E between said plates.
F represents a rod attached to a windmill or other source of power for operating the pump.
This rod is so connected to the plunger-rod A as to act thereon through the cushion E. In this instance it is attached to the plates D D by a casting, G, formed of a cross-piece, g, and rods g g, which latter pass through apertures in the said plates D D and receive nuts at their lower ends, as shown clearlfi in Fig. 3. The upper surface of the cross-piece g is formed with a frame or socket, g to receive the lower end of the rod F and bolts 7, as shown in Fig The section (1 is provided with the collar l held by set-screw h, for supporting the plate D and taking the down-thrust ot' the rod F.
The handle .I, Fig. l, is the handle oi. an ordinary pump. In Fig. 2 this handle is at tached to the rods 9, so when operated it will act through the spring E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is
In a pump-rod, the combination, with the head G, having a recess in its lower face and two depending rods, g g, of the two plates D D, having end apertures through which said rods pass, and also having aligned central apertures, the nuts on. the lower ends of rods 1 the section extending up through said central apertl'lres and liavil'ig a flange, c, on its upper end above the top plate, D, and within the recess in the head, the collar on the section i under plate D, and a single coiled spring on the section ,l' etween the two plates D l), andal i ernately compressed thereby, substantially as set forth.
