SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,374, .lated April 5, 1904. Application filed December 21, 1903. Serial. N0. 186,0'76- (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. JUs'rUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Anchors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in land-anchors.
The object of the invention is to provide an anchor of this character which may be expanded after being inserted in the ground, tlfiereby preventing the withdrawal of the anc or.
A further object is to providea land-archor which will be strong and durable, reliable, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the anchor, showing the parts Fig. 2 is asimilar view showing the parts in their expanded position. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional View of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device with the parts expanded, as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken above the expanding-cone on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention I provide a centrally disposed operating-rod 1, formed on its lower end with a head 2 and on its upper end with an eye 3. Zn the roe 1 is slidably mounted a circular disk or head 4. In said disk are formed slots 5, which are arranged at diametrically opposite points. The outer walls 6 of each of the slots 5 are cutaway and rounded to form bearing-surfaces. The edges of the disk 4are beveled or rounded 011', as shown, so that the same will more readily enter the ground.
In each of the slots 5 are arranged the curved 5 0 port the arms 8. On the inner side of the upper end of each of the arms 8 are formed lugs 9, which are adapted to bear under the disk or head 4, and on the inner sides of the lower ends of the arms are formed inclined or beveled bearing-surfaces 10. On the outer sides of the lower ends of the arms are formed radially-disposed segmental blades 12, which are .beveled outwardly to an edge, as shown.
On the lower end of the rod 1 is slidably mounted a hollow expanding-cone 13, which is engaged on its inner side by the head 2 on said rod. On the lower end of the cone 13 is arranged an annular flange 14, which forms a stop for the lower ends of the arms 8 when in their expanded positions. The outer edge of the flange 14 is beveled or rounded off to facilitate the passage of the cone into the ground. I
In the rod 1 above the head or disk 4 is formed a hole, in which is inserted a pin 16 to form a stop, which is engaged by the head or disk 4 when the arms 8 are in their contracted positions.
In operation, assuming the parts to be in their contracted positions, as shown in Fig. 1, a hole is bored in the ground of about the same diameter as the widest part of the anchor. This hole may be of any suitable depth sufficient to hold, and into the same is inserted the anchor with the parts contracted, as shown in Fig. 1. The anchor is inserted until the end of the cone strikes the bottom of the hole.
The end of the rod is now struck with a hamor expand the arms 8 and force the blades 12 into the solid earth forming the walls of the hole in which the anchor was inserted, thus securely fastening the anchor in the ground and preventing the Withdrawal of the same. The flange 14, forms the stop on the lower end of the cone which when the arms are expanded limits the expansion of the arms 8 by the cone, thereby relieving the arms of all lateral strain and applying the pull to the end of the anchor, as will be understood. After the anchor is thus firmly embedded guy-Wires may be secured in the eye 3 on the end of the rod to securely hold the same. will be found useful in connecting the brace or guy Wires of telegraph and telephone poles, fence-posts, and the like.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requ iring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the combination with a centrally-disposed operating-rod, of a disk or head slidably-mounted on said rod, expansible members carried by said head, means whereby said members are given an initial expansive movement to hold the anchor in place, means for further-expanding said members to firmly anchor the device m. i... e anchor and means for limiting said expansion, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a centrally-disposed operating-rod, a disk or head slidably mounted on said rod, arms pivotally mounted at their upper ends in said disk or head, blades formed on the lower end of said arms, an expanding cone slidably mounted on the lower end of said rod to expand said arms and blades, lugs formed on the upper end of said arms, and a stop-pin arranged in said rod whereby an initial expansive movement may be given to said arms and blades, and means for limiting the expansion of and relieving the strain on said arms, substantially as described.
