SAFETY-LOCK FOR GAS-FIXTURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,066, dated March 29, 1904. Application filed November 28, 1903. Serial No. 162,949. (No model.)

Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Lock for Gas-Fixtures, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel locking device for the valve or cook of a gas-fixture which will automatically lock the plug or key of the cock in closed condi tion when the key has been turned to .shut off the flow of gas from the gas-burner that is a part of the fixture.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,- in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of the improved safety-lock applied upon a gas-fixture cock and adjusted to hold the key thereof in closed adjustment. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view substantially on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the novellocking device.
In the drawings that show the construction and application of the invention, 5 represents the body of a gas-fixture cock, which is of usual form, having a transverse coniform passage therethrough, wherein is fitted to turn the tapered plug or key 6, as is indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 1. The key 6 is held in place by the washer and screw (4 a of ordinary construction, these being mounted upon the projecting smaller end of the key, which at its larger end is furnished with a flat thumbpiece 6.
At opposite points over openings in the side wall of the body ,5 internally-threaded thimbles 5* are formed, which may receive tubular portions 5 of a gas-fixture, the key 6 having a transverse orifice 00 therein, which will be alined with the axes of the thimbles 5 when the thumb-piece 6* is turned so as to dispose it in the same plane with said axes, and when the thumb-piece is turned at right angles to said axes the passage through the loody 5 will be closed, as indicated by dotted mes.
Onthe projecting portion 6 of the key 6 adjacent to the thumb-piece 6 the improved locking device for the key is mounted, and consists of the following details: A flat bracket-v plate 7 is provided with two similar arms 7 formed on opposite side edges near one end of the bracket-plate and projecting in parallel planes therefrom at the same side of the bracket-plate. The arms 7 are so spaced apart that they are adapted to embrace the portion 6 of the key 6 near the free ends of the arms, as shown in Fig. 2. Opposite transverse perforations b are formed in the end portions of the arms 7, which register with a likeperforation formed in the portion 6 of the key 6, and a pivot-rod 8 is loosely secured in the arms and key, as indicated in Fig. 2. A tubular spring-box 9 is formed or secured on the bracket-plate 7 and projects laterally below the arms 7 and at the opposite side of said plate over an opening therein. A circumferential flange c is formed on the end wall of the body 5 adjacent to the thumbpiece 6 of the key 6, and in said flange two notches cl are formed in the same plane with the axes of the thimbles 5 and the openings in the side wall of the body 5, that coincide with thebores of'the thimbles. The-arms 7 a are so relatively disposed that the bracketplate 7 is positioned opposite one flat side of the thumb-piece 6, and a coiled spring 10, which is seated at one end in the spring-box 9, presses at its opposite end upon said side of the thumb-piece, as shown in Fig. 1. A detent-toe e is formed on the transverse edge of the bracket-plate 7 centrally between the arms 7 and it will be seen that the pressure of the spring 10 will cause the toe e to enter either notch (Z when the key6 is turned so as to permit this interlocking engagement of the toe with the notch. As indicated by'dotted lines in Fig. 1, the transverse perforation m in the key 6 hasits axis parallel with the plane of the flat side of the thumb-piece 6, so that when the key 6 is turned and the toe e is embedded in either of the notches d the passage for gas through the body'5 is sealed.
Assuming that the gas-fixture in complete form is connected with a source of gas-supply and provided with a suitable burner, it will be evident that by pressure applied manually so as to move the spring-box 9 toward the thumb-piece 6 the toe 6 will be rocked away from the annular flange c and out of a notch (Z if therein seated. The key 6, that was disposed to seal the passage through the body 5, may simultaneously with the application of pressure-upon the spring-box be turned sufliciently to bring the transverse passage as in the key into partial or complete alinement with the passage in the body 5 and thimbles 5 to feed gas to the burner, the toe 0 now resting on the edge of the flange c. It will be seen that the act of turning the key 6 in either direction so as to extinguish a burner (not shown) will permit the toe e to enter a respective notch d and hold the key locked against an accidental turning movement that would produce a dangerous escape of gas from the fixture.
Obviously the device will operate very effectively if but one notch d is formed at a proper point in the flange 0. Hence I do not limit the construction of the improvement to the employment of two notches therein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent The combination with the body of a gascock, having a circumferential annular flange thereon at one end, said flange having two opposite notches therein, and a plug-like key having a flattened thumb-piece on one end adjacent to the annular flange, of a locking device for the key, comprising a bracket-plate, laterally-projected arms thereon, pivoted near their ends oppositely on the key near the thumb-piece, a toe on a transverse edge of the bracket-plate, adapted to enter either notch in the annular flange, a spring-box projected laterally from the bracket-plate and oppositely from the arms, and a spring held by one end in said box and pressing at its opposite end upon a side of the thumb-piece, so as to hold the toe in the notch and prevent rotation of the key.
