Be it known that we, SAMUEL SHEA and E. W. GILLMAN, of Long Island City, in the county of Queens,

and State oi' New York, have invented a new and improved Lamp-Burner; and wie do hereby declare that the v following is a. full,`clea r, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the Same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification.

. Figure 1 represents a side View of our improved lamp-burner.

Figures 2 and are horizontal sectional views ofthe same; taken on. the plane oi' the line a: z. iig. 1.

Thisinve'ntion relates to anew -inanner of hangingthe arbor oi' the ratcl1et-wheel in coal-oil or other lampburners, and consists'inhangingrone end ofthe same ina sliding sleeve, which can bc turned so as to allow the ready removal and lie-insertion. of the said arbor.

In coal-oil and other lamps, the ratche'ts for elevating the wick generally give outiirstf and a-s at present i constructed, the burners become wholly useless, while, when provided with our improvement, they can be repaired 'by removing,r thew'orn and inserting-anew ratchet.' u

A, in the'drewing, represents an ordinary or suitablelamp-burner, in'vrhich B is the wick-tube; C is. the arbor, on which the ratchets D D are mounted as usual. The case of. the burner A has on one side 'a hole, a, which is solarge 'that the ratchet-wheelsmay be passezl through it.' E is a slotted sleeve or ring, fitted around the burner as shown. The arbor C can, when the sleeve is inthe position shown in figs. 1 and 3, be inserted into 'the burner, through large opening in the sleeve and the hole a, as isclearly indicated in the drawings. The sleeve E, instead of' being perforated to allow the passage oi' the arborand ratchet, may be made in the shape of an -nnclosed ring, between the ends 'of "which the desired spa-ce is left, as shown. l

The end of the arbor finds its bearing in n, small hole, b, in the burner, and in a slot, c, oli-the sleeve, as shown.' The other part of the arbor is-Supported in a. small recess, d, of the sleeve, when the letter is closed ings for the' arbor are proiided; but 'when it is desired to removethe arbor, it is only necessary to turn the sleeve so as to open theliole a, as in g. 3. v

We claim as new, anddesire Ato secure by Letters Patent 1. Providing'a'lampburner withnfremovuble ratchet and arbor, snbstan tially :1s-herein shownand described.

2. The 4sleeve E, when 'arranged around a burner, A, in which a'hole, a, is provided, to allow the insertion and removal of the ratchet and mbox-,substantiallyas herein shownand described.
