PEN AND PENCIL CASE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,8416, dated December 8, 1863.

To all whom it may concern: v

Beit known that I, JACOB J. LoWNDs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen and Pencil Case; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is afull,clear, and exact description ot'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this spceiiication, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal central section of the case of my invention in an extended sta-te; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section of the case and internal parts of the same, the case being in a closed state; Fig. 3, a detached view of the parts by which the pen-slide is operated.

Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.

This invention consists in having the case of the pen and pencil formed of two tubes, arranged so that one may slide within the other, and connected with a pen-slide movement or mechanism in such a manner that the pen will be moved out from and drawn within the case by extending and closing the tubes, the de' vice being also provided with a reserve for leads and a pencil arranged in a novel way to form a convenient article of the kind specitied.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A B represent two tubes, of such dimensions that one may slide within the other. One end of the tube A, which is the largest in diameter, is of bevel form, and has a curved slot made in itto admit of the pen slide O, passingthrough it.

Within the tube A, and at its beveled end, there is attached a plug or head, a, to which one end of a metal strip, b, is secured, and to the opposite end of said strip there is 'attached a collar, c, through which a cylindrical rod, D, passes and is allowed to slide freely.

Between the plug or head a and thecollar c there is fitted a tube, E. having a spiral slot, d, made in it and extending its whole length.

The rod D works within the tube E, and is provided with a pin, c, which is tltted in the slot d of E, and causes E to rotate when D is lnoved back and forth.

On the tube E there is placed a tube, F, which is permanently attached to E and turns with it, and is provided with a spiral slot,f, which has its convolutions in a reverse direction to those ofthe slot d of the tube E, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1. The penslide U encompasses the tube F and has a pin, g, passing through it, which is itted in the slot f of the tube F. The strip b serves as a guide for the pen slide.

To the outer end `of the rod D there is attached a tube, H, which receives the pencil I. This pencil is removable, and either end may be inserted in H, as desired. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The tube H has a collar, It, attached to it, and this collar is secured to the interior of the tube B, a space or reserve, z' z, being allowed for pencil-leads between the tube H and the tube B. (See Figs. l and 2.) J is the cap of the reserve. By this arrangement it will be seen that when the tubes A B are extended or drawn out the pen will be moved out from the end of the case A and the pen drawn within A when the tubes are closed, or B shoved within A, the pen-slide C being operated through the medium of the spirally-slotted tubes E F.

The pencil I may be used with the tubes A B either in an extended or closed state, as de# sired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The two tubes A B, arranged to slide one within the other, in combination with the spirally-slotted tubes E F, pen-slide O, and. pencil I, all arranged as and for the purpose herein set forth.
