UNITED STATES PATENT GrrIcE.N
W. R. EVANS AND L. D. BENNER, OF THOMASTON, MAINE.
PENCIL AND ERASER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,406, dated April 25, 1833.4
1'0 @ZZ whom it may concern: y
Be it known that we, WV. It. EVANS and L. D. BENNER, ot'Thomaston, in the eountyot Knox and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Pencil and Eraser; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being litd to the accompanying drawings, forming ptrt of this speciiication, in which- Fignre l is an outside view of the implement constructed according to our invention. Fig. 2 is an axial section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention consists in a combined knife or eraser and pencil of a peculiar construetion, both being capable of being withdrawn into the holder or case, and the pencil-driving apparatus, being constructed and fitted to each other in a novel manner. y
A is the case, made, in this example of our invention, ot' a hollow cylinder open at both ends, the diameter of its hollow portion being the same throughout, except at the end where the pencil is located, between the line indi cated by the letter i and the point h of the pencil.
Dis a slot made in a longitudinal direction in that part of the case which is to receive the knife or eraser, a short transverse slot, a., being made at its inner end, in a direction toward the right, and a like slot, b, but in a direction toward the left, being made at its outer end. The knife or eraser and its shank are of such a length as can be contained within the case when the pencil is Wholly Withdrawn into it also.
C is a sliding collar fitted upon the case and provided with a pin, c, which projects inward .from it through the slot D, and is iixed in the shank of the knife B, as shown in the drawings.
1f one takes hold of the collar O, he can move the knife in or out of the case and lock it in either position by turning the collar to the left so as to bring the pin c in the cross-slot b, or to the right to bring it in the slot c.
That part of the casewwhich receives the pencil is turned down to receive a collar, E, `whose inner circumference has a screw-thread, j', cut upon it. This collar is loose upon the case, so as to be capable of rotation thereon; but it is kept from moving end wise by the shoulder K of the case on one side, and by a ring, F, on the other side, the said ring bein-g held in place by a screw-bolt or pin, c, which is passed through the ring and into the body of the case, so as to x it securely.
If the case is of hard material, a hole should be made in it to receive the end of the pin e. The end of the caseis made tapering from the line of the rir g F, so as to be of proper shape for using a penci d is a pusher-rod, which for about one-halt' of its length is nearlyequal to the inner diameter of the case, the rest of its length-that is, the portion marked o-being of smaller diameter, so as to iit the nozzle or pencilpoint embraced between the points h and t', and whose perforation is to be of the size of the pencil to be used in it.
g is a feather projecting at a suitable place from the outside of the pnsher-rod, and extending through a longitudinal slot,o, made in the case and covered by the collar E, so as to lit in the grooves of the screw-thread f.
By turning the collar E to the rightor left the i pusher-rod d will be drawn farther in the case or be driven in the opposite direction, thereby expelling any pencil which may have been placed in the pencilpoint h t', or enabling it to be pushed Within the point as the end of the pusher-rod is withdrawn.
The pusher-rod d is to be inserted within the case and properly connected to the collar before the knife is fixed in its place.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combined pencil and eraser above described, constructed substantially iu the manner above set forth.
WV. R. EVANS.
L. D. BENNER.
