IMPROVEMENT IN PEN AND PENCIL CASES.

' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,708, dated January 16, 1872.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN OOOKBURN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pen and Pencil Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of a pen and pencil case constructed in accordance with my improvement, showing the extension tube closed and leadholder sheetin. Fig.2 is apartly-broken longitudinal view of the principal working portions of the case as detached from the Outer shell Or holder, showing the extension tube and leadholder drawn out, and Figs. `3, 4, and 5 are views in perspective, on a still larger scale, of certain details detached. Fig. 6 is a view in part similar to Fig. 2, but on a larger scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several ligures.

My invention relates to a well-knownconstruction ofpencil-case, the peculiarity of which. consists in the employment of what is termed the magic movement, whereby, on simply pulling on the outer end of an inner extension tube, not only is the lead-holder projected or made to protrude beyond the end of said tube, but the latter is also extended to give additional length to the pencil-case. This movement consists, for the most part, of a combination, with said extension tube, of a spirally-slotted inner tube, arranged to slide in or out with it as well as to rotate within it, and a reverse spirally slotted outer sleeve or tube that is stationary within the case, but with the slot of which the inner spirallyslotted tube is connected, at its back end, by a stud, so that, on `drawing out the extension tube,the inner spirally-slotted tube is both ext-endedin common with the latter and rotated, and, in being rotated, its spiral slot made to act upon a studwheel connected with the lead-holder, and restrained from turning by traveling along a straight slot in the extension tube. My invention consists in making such parts, as an entirety, detachable and reversible within the case, instead of being a permanent lxture, as when used only for a pencil case, and in combining with the end of the outer spirally-slotted tube, opposite to that throughwhich the lead-holder works, a ball or projecting end piece, arranged to enter said tube and a fast sleeve or ferrule fitting in a projecting manner over the same end of the tube, so that provision is made between said ball and sleeve for itting in a pen, to use which it is onlynecessary to reverse the position end for end of the series of tubes connected with the movement within the outer shell, case, or holder.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, a represents the outer case orholder; b,the inner extension tube, tted with a nose piece and outer fast sleeve, which latter is arranged to lit in a sliding manner within a fast sleeve on or surrounding the outer one, c, of the spirallyslotted tubes. d is the inner spirally-slotted tube, arranged to slide in common with the extension tube b, as well as to rotate within it, said rotation being effected by a stud, e, on the back end of it, arranged to work in the spiral slot f of the tube c, and the spiral slot g ofthe rotating .inner tube d, simultaneously moving the lead-holder h in or out by means of a stud, fi, on said holder, arranged to lit or work in the spiral slot g of the tube d, which stud is guided or kept from turning by a straight slot, lc, in the extension tube. This, with minor details which it is not necessary here to describe, constitutes the usual magic movement as applied to pencil-cases.

To convert a pencil-case thus constructed and operatinginto a pen-holder, when required, is the object of this invention, and is attained in part by making the whole of said movement reversible end for end within the outer case or holder a, as represented in Fig. l, and by combining with the opposite end of the outer spirally-slotted tube c, a ball or piece, m, arranged to iit within said tube end so as to project beyond it 5 and, furthermore, combining with said tube c and fitting in a like projecting manner over the same end of it, a ferrule or sleeve, n, whereby provision is made between the projecting ball 7 m and projecting ferrule 'n for the entry` and retention of a pin, s. In this way or by these means I am enabled to make both a pen and pencil case of the article,

which, when operated by the within-referredto magic movement, has heretofore necessarily been restricted to only the one use, namely, that of a. pencil case.

What is here claimed, and desired to be se cured by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the inner extension tube b, slot k, and inner and outer spirally-slotted tubes c d, and studs e i, of the ball or end projecting piece m and the projecting ferrule or sleeve n, when the same are arranged, in relation with each other and the outer case, as described, and wherebyr the magic movement is made reversible to adapt it to both pen and pencil, substantially as specified.
