Be it kndwn that'we, JOHNr HYSLOP, Jr., and CHARLES E. PHILLIPS, of Abington, in the county of Plymouth, and State f Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Combined Lifter and lIlfongs andwe 'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andA exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, `reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. This invention relates to .a new and useful implement or device in'which'a lid-lifter for stoves, and a tongsfor handling plates, dishes, Svc., on the-stove or within the oven, are combined. The implement is composed of two parts or jaws, A B, connected by a fulcrum-pin, at. The part is formed or provided with two lips, b c, the former, 6, being slightly curved, and the other, c, extending from b, nearly at right angles, for a certain distance, and then curved forward, asshown ings. 1, 2, and 3, the front part of c being recessed to form a shoulder, ax, the object of which will be presently shown. The part B of the implement is cast with a. longitudinal Vslot or recess Vto 'receive the other part, A, and said part B has two pairs of lips, d d, e e, the lips of each pair being about parallel witheach other.

In using the implement, th'e lips d d work in contact with or opposite to the lip b of A, and the lips ee oppo. site to the rear of c, the lips d d extending forward parallel with the lip b, and the lips e e extending down parallel with the rear of c.

In using the device for lifting stove-lids, the front part of the lip c is inserted under the wire of the stovelid (the latter being shown in red, fig. l) until the shoulder aXcomcs in contact with the wire, and the lid may then be readily lifted and moved. In order to move plates or dishes with horizontal or nearly horizontal rims, the rim is grasped by the lips Z1, UZ cl, as shown in gf2; ard in order to move dishes with vertical or nearly vertical sides, the latter arel grasped by the lips e c and c, as shown' in g. 3.

The device is extremely simple, and may be manufactured at-a small cost, as thc whole', with the exception of the rivets,m ay be of cast iron.

We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y The lifter and tongs, constructed as described, consisting of the parts A B pivoted together, the partB provided with a longitudinal slit for the passage of the part A, and having at its forward cnd'the double lips d d and e e, the part A having the lip Z, and the lip c provided with the shoulder dx, all arranged'and operating as described for the purposes specified.
