TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
` Be it known that I, D. K. IIICKOK, of Morrisville, in thecounty of Lamoille, and in the State of.Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked'thereon.
In theannexed'drawings, making part of this specification, A and B represent tho two portions of this pin', which consist of blocks of wood, formed and used as will be described. The block A is about four inches in length, about half an inch iu width, and about three-quarters'of an inch in depth. About an inch from one end of this block, I cut a square shoulder, as seen at d, in the line of its depth, and remove about half an inch of the wood of the block running toward its long end. The block B is made just large enough to illthe opening thus made, except that it is a little shorter. Areoess is formed in block A, at e, to receive the clothes-line. When thc two blocks are placed together, as seen in Figure 1, a diagonal groove is formed around them, in such a manner that when an elastic bar is shrunk into this groove, its tendency is constantly to draw one end of block B against the shoulder at cl. The bands G C admit of the block B moving endwise, so as to allow the line to enter the recesse. After the line has entered the bands, draw the two blocks snugly and tightly against the olothesupon the line and secure them to it.
This clothes-pin is easily operated in one hand by placing the thumb against the block A, at z', then catching the cross-pin D, on blockB, between the two first fingers.
The block A may have its edges cut away or scalloped, as seen at A:z: :12, so that the two front ngers may embracethe block B, and catching against a shoulder, at a, operate it. I may use either of these modes of operating the block B.
This clothes-pin may be made very cheaply, and will bind the clothes to the line with more or less pressure according to the tension of the spring.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I. claim as new, and desire to secure by'Iiettcrs Patent, is-
The blocks A and B, constructed substantially as described, and connected together by means of the bands or elastic straps C C, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this day of'February, 1868.
' D. K. HICKOK.
