WILLIAM V. MORROW, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. I753,419, dated March 1, 1904.
Application filed June 1'?, 1903. Serial No. 161,918. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. Monnow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and 5 State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bevels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an instrument used by mechanics for drawing angles whereby to 1o cut miters and for adjusting surfaces of work to the same inclination; and the object thereof is to provide an instrument by means of which the angle at which a piece of timber shall be cut to tit in or around a corner is readily ascertainable without much calculation or further measurements. I accomplish this object by the bevel described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 2o Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bevel, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is acrosssection on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is 'a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. .tis a plan and side elevation ofthe index-pointer.
2 5 In the drawings, A is the blade, andB is the stock or handle.
C is a screw-bolt having a nut D, provided with an operating-lever D,by means of which the blade is clamped in the handle at any desired angle. To take up any wear, I provide a nut E on the other end of bolt C, so that when set the operating-lever D will always be in the center of the handle, as shown in Fig. 1. f
3 5 Surrounding bolt C is index-pointer F, the shank F of which enters slot Gr ,in the blade and is rotated on bolt C when the blade is rotated, thereby moving the finger F. of thepointer around the scale H, marked on 40 the metallic plate I, which is aflixed to and forms a part of the handle, a small part of the top portion of the index-pointer forming a shoulder, and the linger projects over the scale-plate, so that when the lever D' is operated to tighten the nut D on the bolt the shoulder of the pointer bears on the stock and causes the blade to be clamped therein.
Y Suppose the operator is fitting moldings in a room of irregular contour. In order to get the proper miter for the moldings, he places the bevel in the corner he desires to lit the moldings with the blade against one part of the wall and the handle against the other part of the wall forming the angle and clamps them in this position, which will bring linger 5 5 F, say, at 6. He then knows that his miter will be found at 3. He then unloosens the blade and turns it until the finger is at 3 and then marks his molding and cuts it on that line. Any other miter is found in the same way. l
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the class described comprising a stock having a longitudinal cleft therein and a transverse circular opening extending through the end of said stock containing said cleft, one side of which is larger than the other; a circular-shaped scale on said stock adjacent to the larger portion of said circular opening; a slotted blade inserted in the cleft of the stock; an index-pointer having a shank adapted to enter the slot in said blade and having a shoulder adapted to bear upon said stock said index-pointer having an index-finger adapted to indicate on said scale the angle at which said blade stands to the stock; a bolt having both ends thereof threaded passing through said stock-blade and pointer; a nut S0 having an operating-handle on one end of said bolt; an adjusting-nut on the other end of said bo t.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 10th day of 85 June, 1903.
WILLIAM V. MORROW. Witnesses:
