PATENT OFFICE.
PERRY M. BOUNDS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 753,227, dated March 1, 1904.
Application filed February 1, 1902. Serial No. 92,101- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERRY M. BOUNDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to the improvement of fences; and the objects of my invention are to provide a combined wire and wood fence of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to so unite the parallel wires of the fence and connect the same with the posts as to permit of the fencing-body being removed from the post without removing the wire connections, and to produce other improvements the details of construction of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face View of a section of my improved fencing. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of one of the posts with the facing board'removed, and Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a portion of my improved fence.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ at desirable intervals on the line of proposed fence vertically-arranged posts 1, these posts having their lower endv portions firmly planted in the "ground. In one face of each of'said posts I form one above the other at suitable intervals transverse saw-cuts or recesses 2, which, as shown, incline inward and downward. These recesses 2 are adapted to receive, as shown, the parallel and horizontal wires 3 of the fence. The wires thus connected with said posts are assured in their positions within the recesses 2 by securing to the face of each of the posts 1 and over the mouths of said recesses a facing-plate 4:, the latter preferably being bolted, as indicated at 5, at its upper and lower end portion to said post. At each end of the line of fence I preferably employ an end post 6 of slightly larger size than the posts 1, said end post 6 being provided with recesses corresponding with the recesses 2 and also having a facing-board 45,
corresponding with the facing-boards a. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, I preferably employ a larger number of bolts 5 in securing the facing-board i to the end post than in securing the-fetc'ing-boards etc the intermediate posts 1. I also provide the outer side of each of the end posts 6 with a facing-board, which is indicated at 7 this board having openings at intervals therein through which the ends of the wires 3 may extend, said wire ends being, as indicated in Fig. 3, suitably connected with a desirable form of lock-pin 8, which prevents the wires from being returned through the openings in said facing-board 7. Although the ends of thenotches in the end post 6 are covered by the facing-board 7, nevertheless it will of course be understood that this post is provided with notches and is a duplicate of the intermediate posts, wherefore it has not been deemed necessary to illustrate the post 6 in detail, as it would be merely a duplicate of. the detail illustration of the intermediate post 1. Between the posts the parallel fencewires are united at suitable intervals by pairs of connecting boards or bars, which are indicated at 9, the boards forming each pair being arranged opposite each other on opposite sides of the fence-wires and being united one with the other at points above and below each of said wires through the medium of nails 10. As indicated in the drawings, these nails are driven from opposite sides of the fence through the boards of each pair, the ends thereof being clenched against the faces of said boards.
In case it becomes desirable to remove the fence or change the location thereof it is obvious that the facing-boards may be removed and the connected wires lifted out of the postrecesses, thus entirely disconnecting the facing from the posts. Owing to the factthat the wires are connected as herein described, it will be seen that when removed in the manner described they will retain approximately their relative pgsitions and may be readily transported to a different location and connected with other posts.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
of posts 1 and Wires connecting the same, of an end post 6 the latter having inclined Wirereceiving recesses on one of its faces, a board 4 secured. to said recessed face and closing the mouths of said recesses and a board 7 on said end post at right angles with the board 4, said board 7 being provided with openings through which are adapted to pass the ends of the fence-wires and means connected With the ends of said fence-Wires to prevent the withdrawal of the same from said end post, substantially as specified.
. PERRY M. BOUNDS. In presence of C. C. SHEPHERD, W. L. MORROW.
