WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 584,175, dated June 8, 1897.
Application filed March 18, 1897- Serial No. 628,154. (No model.)
To all whom it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, BRINCKLE H. I'IALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest Chester, in the coun tyof Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire fences; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of a portion of a wire fence constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the fence-posts. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4: is a cross-section, of a portion of one of the stays.
A is a corner-post consisting of a cylinder of sheet metal having a longitudinal opening a at one side throughout its length, orit maybe trough-shaped in cross-sect-ion. The bottom end portion of the post A has a plate 35 secured to it. The plate B has flanges 1) depending from its ends and flaps I) depending from its intermediate portions between the said flanges and the post. The flaps h are formed by cutting out three sides of a square in the plate and bending down the metal. The flaps are on opposite sides of the openings out in the plate, and they depend crosswise of the end flanges.
B is a plate provided with end flanges 17 and flaps Z), the same as the plate B, but the plate 13 is slidable upon the post A and is arranged above the plate 13 and at right angles to it.
C is a horizontal bar secured to the post A and bearing on the ground, and c is a diagonal bar secured to the free end of the bar 0 and to the upper part of the post.
D are the wires of the fence, which are arranged above the bar G. The post A is provided with holes cl, and cl are fastening devices inside the post A for securing the ends of the wires. The opening a permits of access to the said fastening devices.
A is one of the intermediate posts. This post is exactly the same as the post A, with the exception that the bars O and c are omitted, and the post A is secured in the ground alongside the wires D instead of at their ends.
The plates B and B engage with the ground, and the plate B can slide on the post when moved by the ground, under the effects of changes of temperature, subsidence of soil, or othercauses, without affectin g the position of the post.
E is one of the fencestays. This stay is formed of a thin bar of metal provided with a longitudinal corrugation or groove 6 to pre vent it from bending when any weightcomes on the wires. The stay also has cross-grooves e for the wires. The grooves and corrugations are concavo-convex and are formed by bending the metal of the bar.
Hooked bolts f are provided for securing the wires 1) in the cross-grooves 6. These bolts pass through holes in the bars and are secured by nuts.
The corner-post has been shown cylindrical and the intermediate post trough-shaped in cross-section.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination, with a fence-post, of two anchor-plates on the lower part thereof, each said anchor-plate being provided with flanges at its ends and flaps partially cut from the said plates and depending therefrom crosswise of the said flanges, substantially as set forth.
2. A fence-post comprising a metallic cylinder, and two plates arranged crosswise of each other on the lower part of the said cylinder, each said plate having flanges at its ends and flaps partially cut from the plate and depending therefrom crosswise of the said flanges, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a fence-post, of two superposed anchor-plates on the lower part of the said post, each said plate being provided with downwardly-bent projections at its ends and projections depending from its intermediate horizontal portion, the points of the projections of the upper plate being arranged above the horizontal portion of the lower plate, substantially as set forth.
