STEAM-TURBINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 52,545, dated. February 16, 1904.
Application filed July 7, 1903. Serial No. 164,583- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHANNES HENDRIKUS DE GOEDE, engineer, residing at 295 Paktuinen, and SIMON NANNES GRooT, merchant, residing at 12 Westeinde, (near the Warehouses,) Enkhuizen, Netherlands, subjects of the Queen of the Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam-turbines, and by same numerous advantages oventhe steam-turbines already known are secured.
To set against the well-known advantages of the steam-turbine as compared with the piston-engine, more particularly as regards the small space occupied, the simplified attendance, and the lower cost of working, there are various defects, such as high consumption of steam, high speed, (which entails the necessity for intermediate or reduction gear,) the fact that the direction of movement is invariable, the complicated mechanism, and resulting increased expense for repairs.
According to the present invention the advantages of this class of engine without the resulting defects of same are secured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is is a vertical longitudinal section through the motor-casing and the turbine-disks with a partial view of the vanes. Fig. 2 is a side view of the turbine from the right, the casing being removed; and Fig. 3 shows the form of the vanes on an enlarged scale.
The turbine is coupled direct to the shaft to be driven, apart from which all the moving parts are duplicated, one set being for running the engine in one direction (left-handed rotation) and the other for reversing, (righthanded rotation.) The feed-valve is of a threeway type, the turning of which immediately 1determines/the direction of rotation of the tur- The disks Z2 and c are keyed onto the driving-shaft a and inclosed in the casing 03. The shaft on passes through the stufling-box e and is also supported at f. The vanes g are mounted on one side of the disk Z2 and on the opposite side of the disk 0, and the respective steamnozzles h and i are arranged to correspond therewith.
The cylindrical strips (1 and 7" close the vanes g on the extreme inner and outer sides.
The steam-pipejterminates in the three-way valve In, from which the pipes Z and 0% lead to the steam-nozzles h and a, while the exhaust passes out through pipe n to discharge either to the outer air or to a condenser or otherwise, as desired. The steam-chest cl is fitted with a delivery-valve 0, and flanges p are cast on the casing to facilitate bedding the engine on a foundation. The positions of the threeway valve for forward steaming or reversing are marked on a sector 8.
The turbine is very simply worked. All that is necessary is to set the valve 7c in the proper position, and the engine runs ahead or reverses, as desired. The steam enters through the pipe Z or m to the nozzle ]L or i, reaches the disk I) or c, and sets the samein motion, which motion is transmitted direct to the driving-shaft a. The exhaust-steam is led away by the pipe n into the open air or to the condenser. On reversing the position of the valve 70 the turbine gradually slows down and then begins to run in the opposite direction. The two disks 7) and 0 together form a set, and several of these sets may be mounted on the same shaft, the steam being either admitted to the whole of the disks at the same time or passed from one to the other in succession by expansion. The single steam-nozzle can also be replaced by two or more acting upon the same disk and increasing its capacity.
Among the advantages arising from the use of this invention are: simplicity of construction, durability, ease in effecting repairs, capability of driving in either direction, economy in the consumption of steam, while the low speed at which it can be driven'enablcs the driven shaft to be coupled direct to the turbine without any expensive intermediate gearing.
What we claim is 1. In a steam-turbine, the combination with a casing, of a shaft journaled therein, a plurality of disks fixed on the shaft, an annular series of cup-shaped vanes fixed on one side of 5 encircling the vanes on their inner and outer each disk, annular flanges fixed to the disks and encircling the vanes on their inner and outer sides, the vanes on one disk being ar a casing, of a shaft journaled therein, a plu-- rality of disks fixed on the shaft, an annular series of laterally-projecting cup-shaped vanes fixed on one side of each disk the vanes of one disk being set on the side of the disk opposed to that on Which the vanes of the adjacent disk are set, annular flanges fixed to the disks and sides, and means for directing a jet of steam against either set of vanes at will, substantially as described.
3. In a steam-turbine, the combination With a casing, of a shaft journaled therein, a plurality of disks fixed on the shaft, an annular series of laterally-projecting cup-shaped vanes fixed on one side of each disk, the vanes of one disk being set on the side of the disk opposed to that on Which the vanes of the adjacent disk are set, annular flanges fixed to the disk and encircling the vanes on their inner and outer side, nozzles one for each disk arranged at an gles to the open sides of the vanes, and means for supplying steam to either of said nozzles at Will, substantially asdescribed.
4; In a steam-turbine, the combination with a casing, of a shaft journaled therein, a plurality of disks fixed on the shaft, an annular series of laterally-projecting cup-shaped vanes fixed on one side of each disk, the vanes of one disk being set on the side of the disk opposed to that on Which the vanes of the adjacent disk are set, annular flanges fixed to the disk and encircling the vanes on their inner and outer side, nozzles, one for each .disk arranged at angles to the open sides of the vanes, steamdelivery pipes for supplying steam to said nozzles and a three-Way valve for controlling the admission of steam to said nozzles, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
