PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS S. GRANLUND, OF WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINATION OF THF REVERSIBLE STEAM-TURBINE WITH LOCOMOTIVES AND VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent- No. 768,010, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed October 30, 1903. Serial No. 172,180. (No model.) I i To a whom it may" concern: 1
Be it known thatI, GUsTAvUs S. GRANLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Combination of the Reversible Steam or Elastic-Fluid Turbine with'Locomotives and Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in locomotives and vehicles in which a reversible turbine furnishes the propelling power instead of the reciprocatlng engines now 1n use; and
the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a continuouslyrotating turbine shaft geared to the driving-axle of the locomotive, thereby lessening centrifugal effectsof the reciprocating engine; secondly, to obtain a greater degree of expansion of steam or gas by means of the compound reversible turbine. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which n Figure 1 is a vertical section of part of the combination; Fig. 2, a vertical section taken on line 1 2, Fig, 1'; Fig. 3, a top view of the turbine with the upper half of the shell or cover removed; Fig. 4:, a side view of the turbine with a section taken'on line 9 10, Fig. 5; Fig. 5, a top View of the turbine with a section taken on line 11 12, Fig. 8. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of turbine, taken on line 7 8, Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a vertical section of turbine, taken on line 3 l, Fig. 5; Fig. 8, a vertical section of turbine, taken on line 5 6, Fig. 5.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the views.
The turbine-shaft P, to which are secured the vanes or fans I, Z, O, and U, is geared to the locomotive driving-axle N by the gears X and Y, Fig. 3. The steam-pipe B, Fig. 1, communicating between the steam dome A of the steam-generator M and the turbine by the steam-passages r and s, carries the valve-seats z z, in which the piston-valves h and k are reciprocated by the rod Z, attached to the lever G.
being supported on the locomotive drivingaxle by the bearing Q, attached to the shells T and R by the webs wand o.
The reversing-shaft L, supported by the bearings M and M, Fig. 5, carries the levers d, 7), and m, operating, respectively, the reversing-valves B, Fig. 6, B, Fig. 8, and B Fig. 7, the shaft L being oscillated by the connecting-rod A, attached to the reversinglever F, and connected to the crank C on shaft L, Fig. 5.
The exhaust-pipe E carries the exhauststeam from the turbine to the smoke-stack of the steam-generator M.
When the locomotive is moving forward, the valves are reciprocated, so that valve K uncovers steam-passage S, causing the steam from dome A of steam-generator M to flow through passage D, Figs. 1 and 4, and impinge' on vanes or fans 1, Figs. 3 and L, causing the shaft P to rotate in a right-handed direction. The steam then escapes through passage B, Fig. 4, and shaft L having been oscillated passage C, Fig. 6, will be open and the steam impinge on vanes Z, whereupon it passes through passage C into passage F", Fig. 8, impinging on vanes O, whence it passes through passage E and into passage D9, Fig. '7, impinging on vanes U, after which it passes through exhaust-pipe E into the smoke-stack.
When the locomotive is moving backward, the valve h is reciprocated until it uncovers passage r, Fig. 1, allowing steam from dome A of steam-generator M to pass through passage C, Figs. 1 and t, and impinge on vanes I, after which it escapes through passage B and flows through passage C Fig. 6, impinging on vanes Z. Passing through passage C the steam flows through passage F, Fig. 8, expanding on vanes O, whereupon it passes through passage E and into passage 1), expanding upon vanes U, Fig. 7 after which it exhausts into pipe E.
The front end of the turbine is supported by the bracket :21, Figs. 1, 4:, and 5, resting on spring 2', Fig. 1, which is held by the plate 9 upon the nut n of the bolt y, which is suspended from the angle-iron u, Figs. 1 and 2, resting upon the locomotive side frame f.
It is to be understood that the forms, dimensions, details, and materials employed in the construction of the combination may be varied without in any way changing the principle of the invention and that the words locomotive and vehicle are intended to include traction-engines, railroad cars and coaches, and automobiles.
Although the steam-turbine has been shown and described, any elastic fluid other than steam may be used, such as compressed air, or an explosive mixture of air and gas made from gasolene, kerosene, or coal.
As the steam or elastic-fluid turbine has been used in combination with torpedo-boats, cruisers, yachts, and merchant vessels, I do not claim such combination broadly.
The turbine-shaft running faster than the driving-axle transmits power through the reduction-gears.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination with a locomotive or vehicle provided with a suitable running-gear including driving-axle and propelling Wheel or Wheels, of a reversible steam or elasticfluid turbine comprising one or more series of vanes upon Which steam or elastic fluid 6X- pands,a reversing mechanism admitting steam or elastic fluid on either side of turbine disks or vanes, a turbine-shaft connected with and arranged to run faster than the propelling- Wheel or its axle, a suitable fuel-receptacle, a generator for steam or elastic fluid and a vehicle-body adapted to the conveyance of pas sengers and goods, a controlling mechanism for admitting or shutting off steam or elastic fluid, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a locomotive or vehicle provided with a suitable running-gear including driving-axle and propelling wheel or wheels, of a reversible steam or elastic-fluid turbine comprising one or more series of vanes upon which steam or elastic fluid expands, a reversing mechanism admitting steam or elastic fluid on either side of turbine disks or vanes, a turbine-slnrtt connected with and arranged to run faster than the propellingwheel or its axle, a suitable fuel-receptacle, a generator for steam or elastic fluid, and a suitable connection between the turbine and locomotive or vehicle running-gear, a controlling mechanism for admitting or shutting ofl' steam or elastic fluid, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a locomotive or vehicle provided with a suitable running-gear including driving-axle or propelling wheel or wheels, of a reversible steam or elastic-fluid turbine comprising one or more compartments in which steam or elastic fluid expands, a reversing mechanism admitting steam or elastic fluid on either side of turbine disks or vanes, a turbine-shaft connected with and arranged to run faster than the propelling-wheel or its axle, a suitable fuel-receptacle, a generator for steam or elastic fluid, and suitable devices fortransmitting motion from the tu rbine-sliaft to the driving-axle or propelling-wheel, a controlling mechanism for admitting or shutting oif steam or elastic fluid, substantially as set forth.
The foregoing specification of my improved combination signed by me, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 28th day of October, 1903.
