Description

PATENTED MAR. 10, 1-868.
I B. ESSIG.
BEDSTEAD FASTENING.
BARTHDLOME ESSIG, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent M. 75,254, dated Zlfarch 10, 1868.
IMPROVED BEDSTEAD-FAS IBNING.
flit: 5x11251112 Ititn'th It in tlgtst 32mm gamut on making part at tlgt stun.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, BAP-THOLOME ESSIG, of Sacramento, county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented an Improved Bedstead-Fastener; and Id'ohereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to whichdt most nearly appertains to ,make and use my said invention'or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved and reliable means of fastening theirails ofbedsteads' to the posts, so that they may be easily and quickly taken apart and put together, and, when'put together, will; be secure, and tend to keep the bedsteadgfirin and solid, no amount of racking having a tendency to loosen" the joints.
To more fully illustrate and describe my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, and letters marked thereon, of which Figure 1 is a plan, with a horizontal section ofthe post, showing my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation. i
Figures and 4 are detail views of the plates.
Figure 5 shows the manner of attaching the plate to-the post.
A represents a bed-post, having'a mortise, a, cut in one side at a convenient height to receive the tenon o the end rail B. From one side of this mortise, I cut away a portion of the wood, both from the inner side of the mortise and the face of the post, of suflicient width and depth to admit a plate of metal, 0, which fits into it, and is held in place by a lug, I), which enters a cut, in the shape of an acute angle, on the side of3the post presented to the side rail E. The arm a ofthis plate, which enters the cut on the side of the mortise, is held by the tenou of the end rail, which,-with the lug b, entering and fitting the angular'cut, holds the metal plate solidly in place. This metal plate C is made suflicicntly strong to support any weight which may be placed upon the rail, one end fitting into the out in the mortise, having a lug, 6, in its centre, which fits into the angular cut on the side of the post presented .to the side rail, withthe other end projecting from' the post a sufficient distance to form a catch, at, for the hey attached to the side rail. Thisend of the plate-is formed into a tapcring'slot, into which a key, D, fits. -Attached to each end of the inner-side rail E is a metal plate,
D, having its and projecting so as to form a tapering lug or key, g, which fits into the slot formed between the projections,'b and d, on the plate C. The key is made tapering, so that it will not pass entirely through the I slot whe'n they are fitted together. By this means, the necessity of making a. mortise on each side of the post is avoided, and as it is frequently necessary to take apart hedstcnds with dispatch, there is danger, when the side rails are fastened by mortise -and tcnon, of the tenou having swollen, on account of wet or damp weather, rendering it almost impossible to separate them; but, withmy fastenen'a bedstead. may be taken a'part and set up in a short time without the necessity of hammering, while each part of the fastening operating upon another tends to hold the cut-ire frame in place. I
I claim the plate 0 for attaching the siderail of a bedstead to the post, having'an arm, 0, and oblique lug b, so as to he firmly secured to the'pos't by the tenon on the end rail, substantially usrlcscrilged.
And, in combination with the plate 0, I claim the plate D, fastened to the side rail, having :1. lug onkey, g, fitting into a slotor groove on the plate C, substantially as and for the purposes described. I
In' witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
BARTHOLOME ESSIG. a 8.]
